Thumbs down Iron Chef USA

Has anyone seen the travesty that is Iron Chef USA? I am so disappointed in my fave cable network (The Food Network) that they would dare come up with an American version of the Japanese classic! Did it work with "Godzilla?" - I think not. William Shatner as the emcee? Give me a freakin break! He could never measure up to the showmanship/wardrobe of Takeshi Kaga! Did they think they could compete with the dramatic competitions that have taken place in Kitchen Stadium? How can they think that Iron Chef USA would be nearly as entertaining as THE Iron Chef, what with the commentary, dubbed voices, subtitles, unique ingredients...that's what makes Iron Chef so great!

I won't even go there with the "Martha Stuart olive guy" chef, and Bruce Vilanche (sp?) as a judge.

I am just a huge Iron Chef fan, and was wondering if fellow enthusiasts were as disturbed as I was over this new wannabe show.

The thing that's most fun to me about the original Iron Chef is the ingredient of the day. That, and the outrageous (to the American palate, anyway) recipes the chef come up with.

I haven't seen Iron Chef USA, but I can only imagine they'll be using more "mainstream" ingredients and the result will be pretty boring

Takeshi Kaga (as well as his wardrobe) is such a true original, he can't be replaced or translated!

I've hear that the show was cming, but I have yet to see an episode of the USA version. Personally, I wouldn't mess with an original! I love Kitchen Stadium, the Iron Chief's, the dubbed voices, it's just a package!

I was pretty irritated when I found out that one of my favorite chefs...Chef Roy Yamaguchi...was going to be a part of that show. I couldn't believe he'd sell himself out like that.

Admittedly, I watched it yesterday.

It was awful. They've tried to "Americanize" it too much.
With the chef getting a call phone call in the middle of cooking.
Riding a motorcycle around on the set.
All the theatrics on stage.

I was very disappointed. The Japanese version is 100 times better.

I have a bone to pick with the Food Network. Iron Chef USA is god-awful. I saw it for the first time last year, and it didn't improve on a second viewing.

But even worse, they are messing around with their schedule and they've moved "Good Eats" from its Wednesday night slot! BASTARD PEOPLE!!! "Good Eats" is one of the funniest, most interesting, well-produced shows on TV, period. I would give my eye teeth AND move to Georgia in a heartbeat if my husband could land a spot producing GE.

Give me Good Eats on Wednesday nights or give me death!

Dammit, I didn't know they moved Good Eats from Wednesday night. I watch it almost every Wednesday because there isn't anything else on TV then.

Cool! My sister used to be the Sous Chef at Roy's in Newport Beach, CA. She was so excited to get hired at Roy's - she really admires his work.

Anyway, I remember she came home from work one night and was like, "Roy is going to be on Iron Chef USA!!!!!" She was excited for him, but she wasn't sure it was going to work out right.

I don't get why you consider his decision to be on the show a "sell out". I mean, that wouldn't be the first time. After all, he's had TV shows before! And let's not forget the personal appearances and cookbook deals! The Roy's Restaurants are quite widespread across the globe which I suppose is "ok" as long as the sense of ohana is maintained.

HOWEVER, he made it into a "chain" when he decided to start franchising. He franchised a few of them to Desert Island Restaurants LLC which eventually sold those locations to Outback Steakhouse, Inc. I would know, my sister worked for one of the Desert Island/Outback Steakhouse locations. If that isn't selling out, I don't know what is!

Ah well, my sister no longer works for Roy's. Not that anyone cares, but she's now at Restaurant 808 in San Diego.

On another note, I'm confused about why everyone is acting like the show just came out. Some of my friends were in the audience of the first episode which was taped in Las Vegas and aired a loooonnnnggg time ago. Did it go off the air and then come back on or something?

Finally, I just wanted to say that there is NOTHING which can replace the original Iron Chef show from Japan!!! That show is the bomb! (hee hee.... "It makes my mouth sing!") At our house, we watched Iron Chef and FoodTV like it was the only channel we had!

.....Kelly
