QUESTION
Greetings SF's I have been observing and reading through the previous threads and I haven't found the answer to my specific question. If I'm interested in taking part in the MIP next semester would it be a bright idea to attend the info session this semester. Thanks in advance for responses .

SFs:
If you are afraid to approach members to ask basic questions about chapter programs, etc., why do you think you will be an asset to the organization? Why do you think they will even care if you aren't a known entity to them? One must SPEAK UP and identify themselves if one hopes to be considered for membership.
Sometimes, we all have to swallow our fear and do what must be done. All the emailing sorors on this forum in the world will never erase the reality that at some point, you will have to express your interest to the chapter AT YOUR SCHOOL and let the chips fall where they may. My sorors don't bite and if they do (verbally) suck it up and move on, if you really want this. If they bite physically, then call the police!

I'm just a SF, and although I do appreciate the answers and advice that come forth from this board, I had to get over my fear of approaching members. Things vary from chapter to chapter, and the only way to get *accurate* answers is to ask members. I promise they won't bite... in most cases. I've made some really good friends, and always found the answers I was looking for... just remember that *nobody* can tell you better about what your chapter does than somebody from that chapter... good luck, SFs!

I concur. Sometimes, I think my fellow SFs put members of BGLOs on some high unattainable pedestal...like they are more than human.
Personally, I think it is better to pose a question to a member in your area. Every chapter is different. So when you ask a question online, the person responding may base the response on her own experience in her area of the country. The response you might get from someone in your area may differ--and since you want to join in your area, the local advice may be more helpful to you.
Personally, I think that if you treat people like human beings, they will act like human beings...if you treat them like gods, should you be surprised if they take advantage of that?

I have a question, too.
SF's:
Are you familiar with any of my Alpha Kappa Alpha sorors on your campus? Have you posed your questions to them? Or do many of you find it easier to ask us here at GC because we are faceless internet beings?

Ideal,
Sometimes it is easier to posit a question online since yes, you are faceless internet beigns but also because some of us are afraid to approach members on our respective campuses. When a question is answered with a "no comment" on line it's a lot different than the "no comment" you might get from a face to face convo. Personally, there is not a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. on my campus. Maybe others are nervous about asking members. So maybe it's a defensive mechanism to protect our feelings from being hurt because we don't know how members may react to our questions.
Divine,
How will anyone know you if you don't go to their events/seminars. Attending an info session is an important part to showing interest, much like participating in community service events. Look inside yourself for the answer to your question
