Treatment of "older" members

Regardless if it's your GLO, job, team, or something else…do you think the longer a member has been present in an organization the more respect and privileges they should gain?

What are your thoughts?

Depends.

If they've been active in the organization then yes, there should be certain privileges that they attain. However, to honor someone simply because on paper they've been a member of such-and-such organization for so many years minimizes the contributions made by other members of the organization.

Respect should always be earned. I'm not saying that one should be disrespectful, but in my sorority I respect those who hold positions and do a lot of work for us the most. As for privileges, I can't think of one that someone would get for being a member for a while, outside of wearing a 25 year pin, for example. I like that idea, but I don't think they should get any other privileges for merely being a member for a longer time than someone else.

As for a job, I think the longer someone has worked at a place, the more they know, and they should be respected for that. But if they were really that good, they'd have moved up in position, and again should be respected for their work.

I have to agree with SmartBlondeGPhB... if they have been around and active then yes they should be accorded more respect than someone who has just been "around"..... however if they abuse that respect, then they don't deserve that honour.

I generally give the benifit of the doubt to seniors/elders in the organization, because I don't know how involved they were a decade ago or fifty years ago..... until they prove otherwise they get my respect.
