Some "Smutty" thoughts...

Sorry to ambush you, but do I have your attention?

I am copying some thoughts I posted in a different thread.

The Chit Chat forum got out of control in several ways -- thus the changes that John is making, and also my thoughts below.

These are my comments alone, and may not reflect the opinions of the management or other moderators:

"I've given this whole situation a fair amount of thought over the past day, and have decided that I personally need to be a little more pro-active with "questionable" posts. I know that will anger some, but a quick, non-scientific poll of PM's, posts and comments from other moderators seem to indicate to me that "most" people are getting tired of posts that border on "smutty" stuff.

There are right, well thought out ways, of asking legitimate questions.

Words used for their shock value are unnecessary and unwanted. Personal attacks on people, their family and their organizations are wrong.

There have been a number of people who have stopped visiting Chit Chat -- some who come to GC much less -- and some who used to recommend GC to PNM's and others who have stopped doing that because of the tenor of the threads and posts on Chit Chat.

It seems to me that this has hurt the BB overall.

It is important to remember that this overall forum is for GREEK matters. "The whole of an organization is only as strong as the sum of it's parts." That rough quote is from an Ohio University alumni publication that I read, and I'm sorry I can't remember the author, but I think it applies here as well as many other places.

If offensive threads hurt the overall, then they have no place here.

Who decides what is "offensive." I guess John and the Moderators do. To put it simply, "Moderators moderate." In some cases, that may turn into what seems like thinly veiled censorship. So be it. The root word of Moderator is "moderate." The threads and posts on Chit Chat have gotten a long way from that.

If you want to talk about real sexual issues, that's fine. Talk about them like adults, and avoid slang terms that may offend. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and good taste.

If you have a question regarding taste, check your pledge manuals or the thoughts of your organizations founders. I think you will find some answers there.

Note that the low end age for registering is thirteen. Also, remember that a lot of young people or parents of young people can find this forum with a simple Google search or other search engine.

We can do great harm here.

If you think that's not your problem, and you want carte blanche to be crude, then maybe you don't belong here. There are a lot of other sites who cater to those kinds of things.

To borrow a thought from my profession, consider who the audience is, and what they hope to gain from their visit(s) with us.

Thank you for your consideration of my thoughts above.
