meeting musicans/backstage passes

Has anyone ever had a back stage pass or a meet and greet pass at a concert? If so, did you make a complete ass of yourself, or did you have something witty and fun to say?

share your stories!

Yes and I got to meet the Roots, Mos Def, Talib, Fuel, Run DMC, Eminem, Gold Finger, Kid Koala, and Lucky Boys Confusion. The Roots were cool and so was Kid Koala...the others were too busy screwing around, hitting on girls, or just plain unfriendly.

Last March at the Ataris/Julianna Theory concert, I met one of the guys from TJT because it was his birthday. But I didn't catch his name. lol

Then later that night, after the show, my friend Cat & I camped out at the Ataris tour bus hoping to catch a glimpse of Kris Roe. But he ended up sneaking out early because it was his three year anniversary with his wife. We did end up meeting Mike, the bassist I think...and had a 5 minute conversation with Kid, the drummer. <333

Best night of my life. lol

The only time I can think of offhand is when I was doing public relations for the Benson and Hedges Blues Festival/ John Lee Hooker tribute at Madison Square Garden.

The people I met backstage (Mick Fleetwood, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter and more I can't really think of right now) weren't stereotypical "trash the room and f**k the groupies" rockers, plus I was there in a professional capacity so it was all very laid back and pleasant.

And the food was yummy, too

I never have, but my sister got some backstage passes to a huge Radio Station concert a few years back. She got to meet and take pictures with (then popular) O-Town. Then she got to meet MTV (and Omaha's) Brian McFaden - now that's someone I would have loved to get a picture with

I've done a few of these over the years.

--Styx (several incarnations and certain band members individually, including wives)
--Damn Yankees (ditto, spinoff of sorts of above)
--Sammy Hagar (working w/ a DJ from an Arkansas station)
--Meat Loaf (was working for the bass player at the time)
--assorted other performers both classic and recent at festival shows

One of the key things I learned right off the bat is that the after-show (or pre-show, in Hagar's case) is every bit as much a performance as what you see on stage. It's like a special "closer look". At various times I've done unofficial fanzines, worked with radio stations and booking agents, and done websites for people, so my contact was more business than fan-based most of the time.

I didn't put much stock in being witty, etc. "Dude, great show, looking forward to the next record" etc etc is plenty. Other times (ie, radio stuff) it was, "Dude, can you do a station line for us?"

So my approach to backstage has always been, "Get in, get the job done, get out, and go home." That and "drop me an email when you're ready for updates."

Anybody got the V pass? Sorry, I'm watching Rock Star right now and it's that part of the movie.

My friend and her best friend hung out with O-Town a few times.

I guess the trick is getting backstage and not swooning over them. Act like you don't even care. That's how she's met so many famous people.

Not me but someone else

I volunteer at BayFest every year. It's a 3 day music fest in Mobile AL. This year I was backstage doing a meet and greet (which was my job anyway to organize the m & g) with Default and Tantric and there was this chick there who was running and jumping and screaming "I LOVE DEFAULT AND TANTRIC!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!" She was making a total ass out of herself. She wasn't a young teeny bopper or something along those lines. She was prolly bout 18-20. She acted that way the whole night. After leaving backstage I went to watch the show with everyone else and she was running and knocking people over and just totally out of control. I seriously think she was on something that night, rolling or something.

I've been backstage to lots of different concerts, festivals and shows. I work for bands doing booking and promotion work so nothing really phases me. The only time I nearly freaked was when I got to meet Sevendust. Morgan Rose is my favorite drummer ever and LaJon just totally rocks!!

Let's see here... I LOOOOVE boy bands.. (especially a few years ago when I was a bit younger and they were more popular) I went to all the Backstreet Boy and N sync concerts. I got passes for Backstreet by hanging out the day of the concert hours ahead of the show and someone came out ( it was a friend of a dancer in the show) and sold us her backstage pass and 12 row tix... It wasn't an all acess pass though so we had to hang in this one area and hope they came through.. but 2 of them did and we were just like hey looking foward to the show you're great can we get an autograph... We also met Mandy Moore back there. I also got backstage at the American music awards one year and was on TV because my friend and I camped out all night waiting to see peope arrive on the red carpet.... a radio guy took pity on us and gave us the passes and we met goo goo dolls, and N sync back there and saw/waved to Will Smith, Whitney Houston, Brandy, Britney. Also the next year when I went to the awards.. (Actually went inside and watched this time, not just outside in the cold) we stayed at the same hotel and Nick Lachey (you know Jessica's Man, of 98 degrees fame, they weren't married at the time) but we ended up being in the elevator with him and he asked us "you ladies going to the awards? and he smiled and we smiled... I could've sworn I saw relief on his face that we weren't making a HUGE deal out of him... although I must say he is VERY hot in person. Oh yeah also met AJ from Backstreet at a bowling Alley and Kevin from Backstreet after his performance in Chicago here in San Fran.... it's really all about luck and making yourself available. Also met New Found Glory because my friend like knows them personally....and got us back stage.....
