Advice: My boss is a crackhead

LOL - ok she really isn't a crackhead perse, but here is scoop.

Ever since they hired her, I have always thought she was a complete spaced out idiot. And it hasn't been just me, my co-workers have noticed this too. In meetings she sits there like a lump looking dazed and lost. In our monday morning meetings, she comes in looking like she's partied harder than any college student on $1 beer night. But I just brushed it off until yesterday.

She comes by my desk and the smell of marijuana overwhelms me! I look around to see where the smell is coming from and it was her! I mean she REEKED of weed. It was so loud I had to hold my breath and turn my head to keep from getting a contact high. The whole time while she was talking to me, I just had this look on my face like " I know this heifer didn't get high at work?I know the smell of weed when i smell it and it was permeating from her. It wasn't cigarettes, cigars, beedees, nothing.....it was weed.

I am seriously considering reporting her (anonomously) to our company's HR VP for a variety of reasons (1) because you shouldn't be high at work (2) you shouldn't be DRIVING home high from work and most importantly (3) if that was me coming to work smelling like Tyrone Biggums, I would have been fired.

Any thoughts.....

They would have asked you to leave and told you to stand under the window so they could throw your belongings out to you.

I say tell. Tell so much until you start telling unrelated stuff. Tell.

That is nuts.

I second the motion. If you're reading this at the computer this second, why aren't you with HR right now? If she's bold enough to get high on the job, what else will she do while on the job? Be a stool pigeon, sing like a bird, just tell the truth.

If it weren't for reason #2, I'd say "do nothing". Yes, a woman bold enough to get high on the job would do anything, but that equals mucho entertainment!

Unless you believe that they are going to make her submit to an immediate drug test, I would say that you should wait to see if she makes a pattern out of it. While I am ALLLLLLLLL for ratting her out, you have to have evidentiary support. If you don't have anything and they roll up on her and find nothing, they may disregard it as someone not liking "the new boss." And if your name is attached to it, you may find yourself in a pickle.

I hear ya. That's why it would be anonomous. From what I know, I do believe they would submit her to a drug test because it is in our employment contract to submit to random testing. I figure that if she isn't a dopehead, a drug test will show that and she won't have nothing to worry about.

I'm with Redefined Diva, get some evidence and then boldly strut in your HR person's office and let them know what's up

Maybe things work differently in Corporate America, but I remember when I was teaching, one of my students rolled up in my classroom reeking of weed. The smell permeated his jacket, his shirt, etc, and I had to back up from the smell to avoid a contact high. I turned the kid in just based on the smell alone.

I haven't been faced with such an instance in the private sector, but are y'all realisitcally saying that if the boss was reported today when she reeks of marijuana, and, as a result, HR called her into the office and could clearly identify that unmistakable smell, then nothing would happen? Then, Honeykiss would look crazy? Is an undeniable smell not enough evidence to request a random drug test to (dis)prove the suspicion? I'm honestly asking a question because there may be some management or HR people here.

I do agree that Honeykiss has to be sure of her accusation, but if she is certain, then she should go for it.

I'm in HR and if something like that was happening in my office, I would definitely want to know! Honeykiss, I would suggest that you go to Human Resources discreetly and alert them of your concerns. If they are worth their salt, they'll keep a very close eye on the situation and act if necessary.

If something bad happens because of her while she is on the job, and they can prove management knew about a drug problem and didn't do anything? The potential consequences make my eyes roll back in my head.

I'm in HR as well, and I would certainly want to know, but I would not act on an anon phone call. Now if your company has a hotline that allows you to leave anon calls that is a different story.

Read your company's drug policy and use that as back up. Make sure you express it as a "concern". Even if you decide not to go forward at this time, I would also document everything, who you talked to, what you saw, who else was around, if your coworker are giving looks over her head, etc. Put dates and times down as much as possible.

jojapeach, a student and your boss are two totally different thing. I think a better question would be what would you do it your principal showed up smelling of weed. You are in a position of power with the student. Reality is, you are not with your boss.

Good luck HK

Of course there's the chain of command factor. Would I report my immediate supervisor or manager? I would think that my sense of smell leading me to a serious concern of marijuana usage would supercede the chain of command and would lead to an investigation thanks to my discreet tip.

Question, HR folks: Let's say that boss hypothetically can explain and provide proof that she has been prescribed marijuana for medicinal purposes. Does it clear the situation, or would there still be a concern that she's taking her medicine either during the workday or right before reporting to work at 9 am?
