Question Initiations

My cousin had to do something really crazy to get initiated into a sorority at her college. I was thinking about joining a sorority but I'm afraid I'll have to do something crazy just like my cousin. What are some examples of what some initiations are?

Nice try. Almost all initiations are secret, but none of them, at least the ones that are supposed to be performed, are "crazy". They all have special meaning to those that go through it. What did your cousin have to do?

No sorority or fraternity members are allowed to tell any non-member what happens at the actual initiation ceremony. Those things are supposed to be secrets shared by initiated members only. Even pledges aren't supposed to know until they go through the ceremony themselves. As I understand it, initiations are very civilized and special rituals. If a particular greek org. was to haze, which most don't, I would be shocked if they forced pledges to do anything disgraceful during the initiation ceremony itself, which is supposed to be a beautiful and meaningful thing. Hazing would occur during the weeks of pledgeship, but not during the ceremony itself.

Maybe your cousin was referring to the pledgeship period (6-10 wks. in which you learn about the org. and maybe get hazed before they initiate a new member), and not to the ceremony itself ("initiation").

You should know that, regardless of the freak stories you occasionally hear, about rush & hazing, that the vast majority of chapters don't haze. Even those that do, do it in a minor, light-hearted way, unlike how fraternities do. At worst the tasks could be mildly embarassing, like wearing a barney backpack to class throughout pledgeship, but almost never would you find sororities forcing pledges to do things that are seriously dangerous or illegal.

I encountered absolutely no hazing during my 6-week pledgeship ("new member") period. No one forced me to drink or to perform any weird tasks. I never had to do errands for sisters or anything like that. We didn't even have to take tests on the sorority's history, since that could be construed as hazing. And my initiation ceremony was really serious and special.

Just curious, Laura, what did your cousin tell you? She only had to do one thing? I expect to do many crazy things to earn the right to proudly display the letters and hold my head up high and call myself a . . . well, we know I can't disclose that just yet.

Sigh . . . one day . . .

Here is some info directly from the U of Toronto Panhellenic website: http://utorontonpc.tripod.com/utrecruit.htm

"U of T women's fraternities do not condone any form of hazing whether it would be making a New Member answer the phone a certain way to making them parade in public in conspicuous attire or costume. All National Panhellenic Conference women's fraternities do not condone hazing. If you feel that you have experienced hazing, please contact your Alumnae Advisor or the Panhellenic Adviser for more information.

As for initiations, almost all the Greek groups have a ceremony to reveal their secrets to their New Members. Each group has a beautiful ceremony that is uplifting and meaningful for all members, and that no member need to fear."

I don't know what "crazy things" your cousin had to do, but if they were things that compromised her humanity, dignity, or personal values, that sounds like hazing to me. http://www.stophazing.org/

<<"I expect to do many crazy things to earn the right to proudly display the letters">>

Asia2000...this is a little disturbing to me. Why would you be working so hard to join an organization in which you ALREADY expect to do "crazy" things. I am a chapter founder and I expected to do MEANINGFUL things to earn the right to wear the letters and call myself a sister. I wouldn't have joined any sorority if I thought for one minute it would require me to run around doing anything that did not have a purpose or meaning.
