Emily?

Okay I am trying to remember a quote by Emily Helen Butterfield about "building herself into something". It was the very first thing we ever talked about in our very first chapter meeting and now I don't remember it.

Can anyone help?

Quote from Emily

Found this on IHQ's website but doesn't sound like what you're looking for?

"The growth and strength that our fraternity has attained is so immeasurably above the founders' expectation that I hesitate to express any wishes for the future lest they be too paltry. Perhaps the best I could wish for Alpha Gamma Delta is that each member may have a vigorous body, a keen brain and a clear appreciation of all things pure and right, with the will power and genius to make her ideals become real."

I love that quote. It says so much about the woman she was. It gives me chills.

Sure: "she builded herself into so many lives that she will never die."

It's written in the scroll around the engrossed (technical word for fancy) copy of the Purpose. That version--drawn and decorated by Emily--used to be on the list of supplies that chapters could buy from IHQ. The engrossed Purposes were often given to new initiates. (Maybe they still are?)

Emily also designed the Rose Tree. It was a drawing of sort of ribbon-like branches with roses--I think one rose for each chapter, originally, but I don't know if roses were added for new chapters (I never counted). The drawing was used for the Foundation's notecards for many years. The verse to accompany the Rose Tree is the second verse of an Alpha Gam song (sung to "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes"):
When first to the rose we pledged our faith
We pledged it with jollity.
Memory now has hallowed the love
We sacredly pledge to thee,
O Alpha Gamma Delta rose.

If I can find the Rose Tree I will scan it though I may need someone's help to get it posted.
