Oldest American Dies at 114

Story

''(Slough) is the oldest living American as of the time she died,'' Dr. L. Stephen Coles, executive director of the Gerontology Research Group, said Sunday.

Does anyone else have a problem with that statement? She was the oldest living when she died...maybe that could have been phrased better...

Sorry...I know it's terrible, but it just bothered me...and cracked me up....

it does sound kind of funny but how else would you say it? "before she died, she was the oldest living American" ? is that better?

I would hate to live to be that old - I couldn't handle my children and grandchildren potentially dying before I did.

Not me.

I'm going out Thelma and Lousie style when i'm 61

I don't want to be gettin all old and being a burden on my family.

Much better to go out in one big ball of flame and be remembered than to slowly age and lose capacities.

At the last turn of the century, the life expectency was 40-something. Now it is late 70s. In fifty years, it could be 100.

IMO death is only the begining of a new life.

Seriously though, what do you have to look forward to when you're 90+ years old? Prescription drug dependancy? Not being able to work or legally drive? No sex? Not being able to tend for yourself? Always having to listen to little dip shit grand-children who think they know everything, when you've already lived a life time? Who wants to get like that? Not me....

I have met plenty of people who live into their 80's and 90's. The saddest thing is that they outlive their loved ones. Most of them are pretty independent and can take care of themselves with a little bit of help.

I have a great grandfather who 91. He does not drive anymore, but other than that, he is very independent. Personally, I love life and as long as I can remain healthy, I hope it goes on forever....
