Exclamation Ebony: December 2000 Issue

Sorors,

Please pick up a copy of the December issue of Ebony. It contains an article entitled "Whites in Black Sororities and Fraternities". It is um .... interesting, to say the least. I know this topic has been discussed at length in this or other forums, and I'm therefore not trying to rekindle that fire. I have my opinions on the matter and I stand by them. I just wanted to draw your attention to the article (specifically the Alpha Kappa Alpha portion).

SkeeBunny,

Pg 175 is a riot!

They have a white Sigma named Damian L. Duchamp leading a line of black greeks strolling... Very funny. I do know of another white Sigma who I believe lives in California. He steps with the National team who won Step correct 2000 here in NYC. There was also a white Alpha in the show with the Alpha's from Texas! It is just a little weird that's all to see. I encourage all of you to check out this December issue of Ebony...I havent read it yet but it proves to be interesting with white members from AKA, Delta, Sigma, AphiA, etc.

It is just very weird to see a white person in historically black greek org that's all, I essentially don't have a problem with it... the ladies of your sorority saw fit to make Lisa Terell a member, who am I to dissent? I'm just a sisterfriend. I don't think it is a joke, and I hope you didn't take it that way. I see nothing wrong with diversity, I think it is a step in the right direction, but I am sure others would dissagree...

the blessed diva.

I received my copy in the mail last week and I did read the article. Honestly, I thought most of the statements made, those of the White members as well as those of Black NPHC members, were interesting.

Question

I probably shouldn't open my big mouth about this topic, but I'm curious........

I'm sure you all know that I'm only a Sisterfriend, so I couldn't possibly understand the true depth of your respective BGLOs. I've always been curious if there was a white person interested in a BGLO because their choices of Greek orgs were limited to only those that displayed no true sisterhood or brotherhood, only wanted to throw wild parties, and rarely did anything for the community, would they be turned away?

I by no means mean any disrespect, but I've been wanting to know that for a while. After a group of Delta Sigma Theta members passed,I had a white co-worker actually tell me that Black Greeks really have a true and serious mission from what she could see and she really wished that she could be a part of that. She also mentioned that she felt that BGLOs seemed to be like a close knit family.

I haven't read the Ebony article yet, but as soon as the issue arrives, I'll be sure to take a look

We had a White Alpha at my school and once you talk to him and get to know him you just look at him like another Bruh. He takes A Phi A very seriously and he enjoys the Social aspects as well as the Service & Business of A Phi A. He graduated and now he is VERY active in the grad chapter.

When I was teaching Freshman Composition at Ole Miss (the racism capital of Mississippi) one of my white students pledged. She said that her godmother is an AKA and she always knew that it was what she wanted. She caught a lot of negativity, especially from the Whites on campus. After she crossed, I pulled her aside to make sure she knew her stuff before stepping out in para, and boy did she! I knew then that it must have really been in her heart, because I'm sure she'll encounter some degree of negativity from both sides.

In SoCal's Pasadena grad chapter, there's a caucasian soror. And she's workin' hella hard in that chapter and makin' thangs happen. Her daughter is a soror, too and this soror is biracial.

In SoCal, there is more of a concern with black folx joining the predominately caucasian fraternities and sororities... Most caucasians have very limited knowlege of BGLO's out here--much less than the black folx out here... So we are constantly proving our relevance and validity out here...

I hope you all wont mind THIS brutha's perspective on that article.

There is a need for diversity in certain aspects of society, but diversifying Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,Inc. was one of the biggest historical tragedies of all time. Most Brothers of my Fraternity would know this. For those of you that don't, consider the time of the founding of Alpha. We were founded 39 years after the END of slavery. The Knightridders were at their peak of activity. The JEWELS(founders)were investigated by the U.S. government for suspicion of being a communist organization because of our committment to "pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps"-meaning the promotion and financial support of higher education on the part of the JEWELS and first initiates. The agriculturalists feared losing their free/cheap labor pool to colleges and trade schools, so they enlisted the aid of the Knightridders and other similar organizations to keep the hearty, fearless, black man in check. My Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, was one of the very few organizations that directly opposed these groups, and made a major contribution to the uplift of former AFRICAN SLAVES.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO ALL AMERICANS, ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY INC. SPEAKS TO THE NEED OF AFRICANS LIVING IN THIS COUNTRY FIRST- THEN TO OTHERS! Thus, our colors-BLACK AND OLD GOLD-were chosen specifically for the representation of OUR ranks, and OUR people.
