I moved back home with my parents after I graduated this past spring, intending to sub and save up $ for graduate school next fall. But...I'm having a really difficult time. I was away for four years and I always said I hated the city because of all the traffic, but now I'm back here and the place is practically deserted. My town has a population of 400, and even on their wildest nights most people can't stay up past 8 o'clock. I can't stand it anymore! My sister lives in the city and I stay with her on weekends, but I'm thinking of moving there and getting a job even though my mom doesn't want me to go. I feel so terrible disappointing her, but once I realized that I spent four Saturday nights in a row crocheting, I knew I had to do something. Can anyone relate?

Oh god i can relate.

I went to school in Bryan-College Station, a metroplex of about 80,000. Now i took a job teaching on the Reservation and i'm living with my mom for the next couple weeks until i get an apartment in Rapid City.

I'm in martin, SD, pop. 500.

My only saving grace is that my mom's cousin owns a bar. I'll be there tomorrow night watching the A&M game, and then this weekend we're heading to Rapid to go apartment hunting(thank god)

But yeah, i can totally relate babe.

Sure, because I know your hometown and know you're really not exaggerating about it

Moving to the "city" isn't really that far away, either. There's plenty of areas there where the traffic isn't so bad and such, decent living and enough jobs. Big bonus, you'd be close enough to drive to your parents for dinner or visits when you wanted to.

Do whatever's best for YOU, and hope that it all works out for you.

Louisville isn't that big of a city but it does have traffic
It's not that bad though
The worse that could happen is sitting in traaffic for 30 to 45 minutes
Imagine this. . .when I lived in Dallas, I got up at 6 AM to be gone by 645 so that I could sit in traffic for 1 hour and 29 minutes and make it to work by 8:15 AM. . .let's not to mention the walk from the parking lot to my building and catching an elevator to the 19th floor. . .

Louisville isn't bad at all . . . come hither. . .

Girl, I know what you mean- when I moved to Bowling Green for school after growing up in the inner city part of Louisville I felt like I was in the country.. but after a few months it got better.
Do you have many friends there? That can help. I know when I went home with my ex- to Cynthiana KY- pop. like nothing! we used to hang out with his friends. Of course, they mostly smoked pot and drank a lot and complained about not having any women in the city.
On second thought- your sanity is worth it, pack your bags, there are more jobs in the city anyway!

After having grown up in a tiny tiny town, and escaping to a medium-sized city for college, I can't imagine going back there to live, even though I think my parents would love it if I did! So, I understand where you're coming from. I would say move. You have family there, and probably a lot of friends too, so it's not as if you're moving off to the big city without a clue. I want to live away from everyone and everything. I feel like someone on Fight Club. I'm constantly connected to this corporate structure and this culture that's hard to move away from. For once, I'd like to not hear noise, not hear a damn cell phone, not hear people from the trading desks yell about their spreads, not be in reach of wireless internet...

I've always loved the city with all its problems...

I also like open spaces, too...

I guess that is because the SoCal lifestyle is such that either the outer space aliens live out in area 51, or the Baywatch beach bums in the cities...

There are hardly any real small towns in SoCal... Suburbian, yes, but truly small towns? What, like Boulevard, California? Or Hemet? But even Hemet has gaming in their backyard...

Maybe Ojai... But then, if you can get cable or mobile phone reception, then...

Remember when Barstow, California was a small town--MAN has that place grown!!!

ilovemyglo- I can definitely relate to you. At least Bowling Green is a little bigger than Murray. Moving from Louisville, and going to school right in the middle of everything, to Murray, KY, a university that is 45 minutes from the nearest mall, or relatively big town, was quite an adjustment. I love it for school, but could never live here for good. As soon as I graduate I'm heading for the city, preferably San Diego.

Courtney, one of my best friends went to Murray. She loved it, but couldn't stand being in the middle of nowhere. After 2 years, she relinquished her scholarships and transferred home to U of L.

One great thing about Kentucky, there's a few major cities/towns and a bunch of burgs and hollers!
