Need Advice Fast

Ok so here's my story: My sorority is having elections tomorrow for one position because the girl who held that position left the school. I am up for that position along with 3 other girls. The position is for alumni correspondent and the girl who gets that position would have to put out a newsletter and plan the alumni reunion in like one week along with send out invitations, etc. (Our alumni weekend is on the 10th-12th). As some people on here may already know, I have heart complications and had open heart surgery when I was 4. This past weekend I had heart palpitations and needed to go to the Emergency Room. I now need to get in touch with my cardiologist to find out if I need to go on medication and where I need to go to get testing done. The doctors at the hospital told me it was most likely caused by stress and that I should avoid putting more stress on my heart and the position of Alumni Correspondent is a really high stress position because she needs to do everything in a very limited amount of time. I know if I got the position, I would be able to do a great job of it, I just don't know if I can risk it because of my heart. So tomorrow night, I don't know if I should go through with the election or put myself out of the running. Any advice from anyone would be very much appreciated.

I think that your health comes first! You said yourself that this position is high-stress and you need to lay off of the stress. I think that it may be in your best interest to not run and focus on your health. There are pleanty of other positions out there and I am sure that your sisters would rather have you in good health thank take a position you can't physically handle. Good luck and I hope that you rest and take it easy for awhile!

If the position is high stress and the doctor wants you to avoid stress, I think that you shouldn't run for the office. As Allison wrote, you're health comes first. Get well soon.

I agree with what the others have said. Maybe tomorrow (tonight?) at elections, state that you are withdrawing your name because of the health complications, but that you'd be glad to help whoever does get the position with whatever she needs, because you'd really like to be involved with the newsletter.

What she said. I'm sure your sisters will all understand that health comes first, and that whoever is elected would love your help!

As everyone else has already stated, your health is very important and you need to take care of yourself first and foremost.

Coming from the current Alumni/Spirit chair of my chapter, I can say that the new chair holder will probably be more than happy to have your help. It can be a little stressful the week before the event *at least for me* since you want to make sure that everything will be ready and everything will run smoothly. There are times that I have needed the help of my sisters and of course they stepped up. I hope that this helps you at all...

Echoing the sentiments already stated!

Please realize that there will be other positions in other years - IF you take care of yourself now! My thoughts are with you.

Ginger's right, you can be involved but distance youself from the stress.

Get well soon! I'll keep you in my prayers.

is this your last semester in the house? if not, i would wait until another semester. the position is always going to be there right? this time just isn't your time to hold the position. your health is more important. when they call your name, just say thank you but you respectfully decline the notion.

Thanx to everyone for all of your help and concern! Unfortunately everyone told me exactly what I was afraid of. Well not to worry, I didn't take the position. Right now I am still waiting for my cardiologist to call me back to find out if I need medication and/or testing. Keeping my fingers crossed! I'll keep everyone posted. Thanx again for all the support!

What I would do is try to handle stress better regardless of what you choose to do with your sorority. Heart condition or not, stress is a leading cause of many diseases/other conditions and can have adverse, irreversible conditions to your health.

I would try stress management techniques and get your general overall health as perfect as can be and then possibly consider running for office.
