Question Advice

Hello Ladies,

I am wanting to become a member of a grad chapter of AKA. My problem is that I don't know any AKA's that are in a grad chapter in my area. I am from a small town and there are not any AKA's here. The grad chatper were I do know some AKA's is hours away from here.

My question is would it be disrepectful to write a letter to a grad chapter and asking if it would be possible to meet with them?

I have already asked a few freinds of me who are members and they told me this would be okay. Just as long a the letter was not like a interest letter.

I would just like to get more positive responses before I do so.

If your wondering why I don't ask the AKA's that I know to help me, but they can't because they are new members to the chapter and can not invite individuals in yet.

Thank you,

Serious Hopeful

What area of the country do you live? Have you searched our national website? If so, then you would be able to determine if there is a chapter in your town or not?

If I was a graduate interest, I would really be wanting to know when the next upcoming Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. event was being held. I would really be looking in the yellow and white pages for a number I could reach. I would really be about researching the chapter's history, especially if I lived on the east coast. I would really be trying to attend ALL the graduate chapter's events and asking them if I could help... That's what I would do, but that's me... And I am already an AKA.

I am from Alabama. I have done research and all of the grad chapters near my home town are a few hours away at this time.

I plan on moving to Birmingham, Alabama in January and wish to become a part of a grad chapter there.

Some chapter members down here in the South think it's dirspectful to ask a lot of questions and I really don't know how to go about doing that without the members thinking I'm being to forward or disrespectful.

I hope you ladies understand and I thank you for your help.

I agree with my soror. Membership on the graduate level is by invitation. As an interest, the best thing you can do is put yourself in a position where my sorors would want to invite you. Your community service and activism must be impeccable and you must do your research. That is how you position yourself for membership. I know this is not easy and it shouldn't be. I will also agree with you that many grad chapters are not receptive to questions from interests that resemble letters of interest. Therefore any correspondance should be about events that you can participate in that are open to the public. I'm not trying to preach but I am trying to caution you against something that I have personal experience with.
