Formal rush was actually A LOT more fun than I had anticipated. I was dreading it, and I wasn't sure if I was "the type," but it turned out great for me in the end. Yes, it is really stressful, but the parties and getting to meet so many upperclass girls was surprisingly fun & pleasant. You will be surprised by how genuinely nice nearly all of the sisters are.
I would advise you not to limit your options by buying into the houses' stereotypes. And don't let yourself fall into the trap of believing that certain chapters are too good for you, or that they'd never want you. You'd really be surprised how things work out sometimes.
I approached rush completely expecting to get into house ABC, which had a sort of in-the-middle reputation. A lot of my guy friends were pushing me to go for ABC. I also liked house XYZ during rush, but they were considered "higher" on the social ladder, plus they had a reputation for being full of athletes. House XYZ kept inviting me back each night, and I was always pleasantly surprised, but I thought I had no chance. By pref night, I discovered that in fact several actives of XYZ were not athletes, and that I just might fit in there. I ended up preffing ABC, since it seemed like more of a natural fit, and since I was still in shock over XYZ apparently wanting me, but guess what. I ended up getting my bid from XYZ, the house that I had assumed I never had a chance at. And looking back, I realize that XYZ saw something in me that I couldn't see in myself at the time. And I am definitely enjoying XYZ's better reputation and arguably closer sisterhood. Sometimes it's good to trust the sororities to know where you best fit.
