Erykah Badu and Floetry Top 2003 Lady of Soul ST Nominations

(7/18/03, 10 a.m. ET) -- Neo-soul duo Floetry and hip-hop priestess Erykah Badu came away with the most nominations for the 2003 Soul Train Lady Of Soul Awards, which were announced at a July 17 press conference at Spago in Beverly Hills.

Floetry earned nominations in four categories, while Badu was named in three. Badu will also be honored with the 2003 Lady Of Soul Aretha Franklin Award as entertainer of the year, at the ceremony which will be held Saturday, August 23, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California.

Other top nominees include singers Heather Headley and Vivian Green, who earned three nods each in the single, album, and new artist categories.

The show will be hosted by comedian Arsenio Hall and singer/actor Tyrese, who made the announcements at the press conference, as well as nominee Headley and comedienne Aisha Tyler. Actress Vivica A. Fox, who was also on hand, will be presented with the 2003 Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement. ((WHY))

Producer Don Cornelius said he is excited by the quality of nominations this year, which were voted on by radio programmers, retailers, and artists themselves. "The largest vote-getters for the most part are people who are into melodies,” says Cornelius. “That's not to say that mostly guys talking on drum machine beats, that rap and hip-hop is not still important and still one of the important cultural phenomenons on the planet. From mtv.com on August 28, 2002:

TG4

Names: Ambee, Davida, Ashley, Keisha
Hometowns: Haynes City, Florida, and Los Angeles, California
Album: TG4 (due September 24)
Single: "Virginity"

The 411: "It's been fun," Davida said of being the first act to perform every night on the Scream 2 Tour. "People think it would be hard because we're the only girls opening up for a bunch of boys, and at first it's difficult, but crowds are starting to warm up to us and like us. It's getting a lot better."

The teenagers are comfortable stomping across the country with B2K and IMX, the boys in their musical clique (see "Bow Wow, B2K, IMX Rile Up Girls Of Memphis At Scream 2 Tour"). They've been playing with boys all their lives.

"TG4 stands for Tom Girl 4," Ambee explained. "We dress like boys, we dance like boys — that's just our style and our image."

And they make out with boys, as told on their first single, "Virginity." That's as far as it goes, says the funky foursome. "We're just trying to tell girls that you don't have to do anything you feel pressured to do," Davida explained. "What it all comes down to is that the decision is up to you, no matter what it is. Not only girls, too. Maybe guys feel that there are some things they feel pressured about. It's up to you whether you want to do something or not."

And as much as they embrace being role models, they are hoping to follow in the footsteps of their "brothers" B2K and go to the top of the charts. They start filming the video for their second single, "Can't Trust a Friend," in the next few weeks.

I rememeber seeing their video once. I remember a small discussion about them on the Ave. when the single first dropped. The song says something along the lines of you can kiss, you can roll on me, but you can't take my virginity. Of course, those may not be the actual words, but they are not far from 'em. The song is garbage!!

Talking TG4

They were also on tour with B2K and Bow Wow (Scream 2)

Their whole show was garbage.

I do not think the categories for nominations are too broad. IMO, it is strange for Heather Headley and Oobie to be nominated for the same award. Who is OOBIE?

Another thing I do not like about the soul train awards is the fact that some of the nominees are people that are virtually unknown without talent to back them up.

Thumbs up Floetry

Well, I'm glad Floetry finally got some love. Their CD is off the chain, although I must admit, the "flowing" does get on my nerves some times. "If I Was A Bird" is my absolute favorite song on the album.

I was asking the same thing! I did a search and Oobie has a small website on tvtrecords.com. It's funny, because the song she's nominated for is the one I always turn off every time it comes on! I HATE that song!

I hope Floetry cleans up this year! Their CD is the BOMB!!!

Ok, why is Solange nominated? I never saw her video!

I love Erykah, but why did she get the Aretha Franklin Award this year? She only put out ONE song last year!

Can anyone name me at least one of Vivica's "career achievements"?

That's what I'm SAYIN'!

And add these two songs to that list, IMO:
Oobie featuring Lil' Jon & The East Side Boys, "Nothin's Free"
Amanda Perez, "Angel" (from the heavan's a-bo-ove-oo)

Boo-hiss!

I'm for JazzyFatNasties (they're the bomb), Floetry, Missy, Heather Headly, and India.Arie. I LOVE Erykah Badu, but she doesn't deserve it this year (she onl had 1 song out)...

As far as Vivica's Achievements this year are concerned, i can't recall any...

all of my thoughts exactly...first of all, what song did solange have? i knew the album dropped and i saw her perform on soul train, but that was the jist of it. maybe this is a pity nomination since we all know she'll never be able to come out of beyonce's shadow.

as far as ms. badu, though she did only have one song, this award is well deserved. she's done alot of great work...i'll admit , she's probably my favorite artist out there, no matter how much stuff she puts out. i mean, isn't this the same award they gave ashanti last year (tooting up my nose...i can't stand that over rated broad), and we ALL knew she didn't deserve that one.

and vivica....well, i guess her "stellar" performances in "two can play that game" or "juwanna man" is what what put her over the top (HEHEHEHEHEHEHE!)

I have to agree. Erykah has one of the most highly anticipated albums to be released this year. I, personally, CAN'T WAIT for it to drop! Everyone has been waiting for Erykah. No one really had that great of a year. I can just about put a million dollars on Beyonce getting it next year.

As for Vivica, I don't know how in hell she blew up. I mean, she was cool in Two Can Play That Game, but Juwanna Mann had to go!! I dont know what it is. Maybe I should do a saerch....
