Advice on how a hopeful student should act.
Greetings to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha!!
I am interested in your sorority and hope to one day join but I could use some advice about a few things.
I have been told that if the members of the sorority that you want to join know you then you have a better chance of getting in. I'm not going to say that they don't know me at all but I don't run up in their faces all the time like I see some people doing because I know that probably can get a little annoying also. Basically I want to know how could I let them know that I am interested in their sorority without being too anxious. Also this season the color pink and different shades of green are really popular and I was told that members of sororities don't like to see non-members wearing their colors and if you are seen wearing their colors and then they find out you want to be a part of their organization,it might make it harder for you.
Thank you for answering my questions. I hope to one day join your sisterhood.

Go to the Greek Life Forum and click on search (upper right corner of the screen). Search by topic for "Don't Want to Seem Fake" by prettygyrl on July 19. Some of your questions may be answered there.

I wish you much luck. I would also like to add that we do not own the colors pink and green. Wear whatever you like. If it looks good on you, go for it. Pink has always been my favorite color (this is very obvious from almost every childhood photograph). I wore a lot of pink and sometimes a pink and green combination. No one ever mentioned it to me.

Also, you can check out another forum: www.delphi.com/sisternet. There is a topic called Wearing Pink and Green. You will have to list ALL of the topics because it was awhile back.

Well I think that when you are on campus and if everyone knows what you want to pledge and you intentially wear the colors together then it is disrespectful. Some females on my campus try our patience by wear the colors together intinally to make us mad. I think the best way to let a sorority know that you are interested is to participate in their programs and or functions. Everything that they have, make it your business to be there. It just looks like you are very interested and are will to give of your time for the sorority.
I love my colors dearly but, together, if you are not an AKA, they do not match, and anyone that put them together should and will know that. Each chapter is differant than others so, I hope this advise will help you to achieve your goal as a memeber of AKA. GOODLUCK and GOD BLESS

I'm sorry Pinkice, but I must disagree to an extent. I wore pink or pink and green combinations on my campus prior to initiation and sometimes I would even get compliments from the sorors on campus. Of course, not all sorors think the same way, but I'm forutnate that the sorors on my campus did not view our colors as strictly an AKA possession.
I do not see it as disrespectful if your outfit is to be worn as a set. There were times when I aslo wore red and white or blue and white, but I didn't buy or wear my clothing to be disrespectful to the other organizations. If I saw a dress that was designed with pink and green flowers, for example, I would buy it if I liked it.
However, I do understand your feelings if people do it with the intent of being disrespectful. Then, no, that is not cool.

Hmmm, I don't know about the color thing. It's a judgement call and how you present yourself will determine how people will react. For instance, as an interest, I wouldn't have dared to grab a green top and put in on with a pair of pink pants. That's kind of blatant, like pink ice said ( in so many words ) those are not very popular colors to mix and match. Many people wear red&white and blue&white, but very few will coincidentally wear pink&green just for the heck of it (although I did once with sleepwear in college, without realizing it, but that's another story...) But, if I saw a dress that had a combination of the colors and it was cute, I just may have to buy it. AKATUDE is right, we don't own those colors.

True sorors we do not own the colors but, we are associated with them and sometimes individuals will try your patience just to see what you will do. I know before I went over I never thought about wearing the colors not alone combining them.
I guess it is the tolerance of the chapter on the campus. To each is own.

I understand what you guys are saying about one being intentionally disresepctful when wearing your colors. But I have 5 favorite colors each with it's own unique reason for being chosen: 1)PINK (which is my MOST favorite)because it represents femeninity, when you think of pink most of the time you think of little girls. 2)Yellow (Gold) For just that reason GOLD (I'm a Gold digger, just kidding) 3)Green, Because it's the color of money 4) White because it's pure and 5)Black, because everyone looks good in black, lol
Now, I wear any combination of these colors, not to anger or disrespect anyone but these just happen to be what I have a lot of, I wear pink and green (and not to be snotty, but I do look nice in those colors, but I also look nice in any color that has the word hot or neon in front (I'm a dark skinned sister)), pink and yellow, green and yellow, black and green etc.
I think that people should be able to wear what they want too, If done tactfully, I'm not saying wear a pink green combo everyday, but I can't go a week with out wearing one of the colors, because their what's in my wardrobe. Now if I were to start doing the call and throwing up your sign...... LOL (I'm just kidding ladies please don't get mad)
But my point is that some people genuinely "L"ove these colors. And it shouldn't hurt your chance to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha!

Ladies, while reading some of the responses, I have noticed a little mix-up with one of my questions. I never meant wearing pink and green together because I agree it doesn't match unless it is worn by an AKA and I would never wear those two colors together unless I was an AKA. I just meant wearing the colors seperately. Thanks again for everyon's input.
I guess I shouldn't say that it doesn't match it you are not an AKA and it does it you are; I was merely trying to state that in my opinion I wouldn't wear the two (as solids) together. As someone mentioned before the colors look good together in plaids, and some floral prints(even though I am not a real big floral person.)
Hope this further clears up any questions.

I think it's funny how people say pink and green do match unless it's worn by an AKA. Yes, if you are wearing them as two solid colors that would be a little odd, but as a floral print, stripes, gingham, etc. then there shouldn't be a problem. That is the point I was trying to get across. I understood your question.

I have seen pink and green worn together...why does it not match? And the people wearing it were not necessarily Sorors.

Soror AKA2D, sometimes it's the shades of pink and green that people try to combine that does not look that great, especially the bright shades of pink and green. Actually, I've never worn the colors as solids together (green pants/pink shirt or vice versa). But I do wear pink and green floral print dresses, and I bought a pink and green gingham dress this summer that I absolutely love.

I have to agree w/ AKAtude on this one...I think that pink and green can be worn together...why does it match if you are an AKA but not otherwise? If you were out how would people who didn't know you, know you were an AKA unless you made it known?
I have a dk.pink suede skirt that I wear w/a white tank and a celery green cardigan and I get compliments on the color combo a lot. I think it just depends on the shades. I didn't put the outfit together w/ AKA in mind and I definately would not wear a pink and green combo that looked forced.
I also agree w/ pinkice...you need to use your discretion and think about who you are dealing w/. I used to attend a HBCU and I went to a jr. class event at the Hard Rock Cafe and it was sponsered by the Delta's...I was a jr. but I had no intentions in pledging Delta...well I had a cranberry and vodka and thought nothing of it...a month later I saw one of the Delta's on campus and do you know that she came up to me on the promenade and said...aren't you the one who was drinking the red drink? I had to think about it a while. I guess what I'm trying to say is that some people look for you to offend them while others may not care one way or the other. (Sorry it was so long winded!)
