Question...
Does anyone know if AGD had a house at Michigan State? I know the chapter de-activated in '00, but most of the sororities have houses...what does a chapter do with a house when it deactivates??

Michigan State's Chi Chapter house was designed by Emily Helen Butterfield, so that house isn't going anywhere. I remember when the chapter closed they asked alums if they wanted to come live in the house so that they could keep it open. Worst case scenario is they might rent it out to another sorority until they decide to recolonize.

Alpha Gamma Delta has reserved her right to recolonize Chi Chapter within the time limit set by NPC for returning to campus without the local Panhellenic's permission. I expect that Michigan State will hear about Alpha Gam's return to campus sometime very soon!

Would you happen to know how long that time limit is? This might sound kinda weird, but I might be going to State this fall and I've thought about joing a GLO. I know a few greek girls from this past year at a different college, and the Alpha Gam girl was by far the sanest. I've emailed a few people, and I'm trying to find out some info about maybe reopening AGD. If there's any way to do it that's faster/easier than what NPC's website lists I would really apprecaite hearing about it. Actually, if anyone has any info at all about AGD at MSU I'm interested!

Unfortunately, I don't know what the timeline is. That's a decision for the "Big Squirrels" to make. All I *do* know is that Alpha Gam reserved the right to return to campus. I would suggest calling our IHQ or emailing them to find out more information.
Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

Meliahna, I'm glad you're interested in Greek Life and Alpha Gam. Although Maria is right - we are unaware of the current timeline - it's generally considered that when a group goes off campus with the thought of returning, it likes to wait four years until the members have graduated and a new reputation can be established. So, it is a possiblity that the Chi chapter could recolonize next year or the following year. Your best bet would be to contact our IHQ, as Maria suggested!

You can do as much as you want as a graduate student! You can serve as an advisor, or if you're even more keen, apply to be a Leadership Advisor (you go to IHQ for training with the LCs and recieve a grant from the AGD Foundation to assist in school- of course then you have to report to IHQ on a regular basis and commit a lot of time to the chapter).
As for the Chi Chapter house- one of my friends is a chapter counsultant for his fraternity which either just recolonized Michigan State or will be- and apparently that fraternity my be renting our house.
It tears my heart out that the only two houses designed by Emily Helen are closed now.

If a fraternity moves in, I'm sure IHQ will give them strict rules about the treatment of the house.

Supposedly headquarters "reserved the right to return to campus" at Penn State, and when that alotted time at passed, we were informed that headquarters was told my the local Panhellenic that they could not allow us back at that time. Seemed kind of crappy to me...wonder if we would have left if we ever knew that would happen?
I've tried to contact headquarters to see if there are any updates, as I had heard that there was a local group trying to go national, but have not received a response.

Do you think that could happen at State?
I'm not sure I really want to start (or restart) a group, but the more Alpha Gams I talk to, the more I feel so at home with them. I love their purpose and mission...
It would suck SO ROYALLY if they weren't allowed back!

Hi Everyone!
I wanted to clear a few things up about the Chi Chapter House and Alpha Gamma Delta returning to MSU's campus...
The original house occupied by Chi Chapter was indeed designed by Emily Helen Butterfield; however, that is not the house that was last owned and used by Chi Chapter. The Chi Chapter house has not been sold and there are no plans to put it on the market. It is possible however, that it could be leased to another women's group.
Returning to Michigan State depends on several factors. Alpha Gamma Delta is second in line to return, behind Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity. In colonizing or re-colonizing on a campus, the recruitment statistics for the last three to five years are carefully evaluated, as well as projected growth of the college/university, and several other factors such as alumnae support and availability of advisors--part of the lifetime involvement we pledge. The Fraternity certainly wants to return to MSU, but only if Chi Chapter is successful and provides the members and new members with a positive Fraternity experience.
Hope this clears things up a bit for everyone!

Would any of you happen to know why Chi chapter closed in the first place? I know a different sorority/women's fraternity closed due to low numbers, and another to financial reasons right about the same time as Alpha Gamma Delta. I emailed IHQ but I'm not sure what to expect from them. In all honesty, they have no reason whatsoever to tell me.
Aside from the closing, is there any way I can guage interest in re-opeing Chi chapter? There are plenty of chapters in the area, and I believe quite a few alumni chapters as well, so if someone wanted to start it up again, it seems like there would be ample available support... But I would imagine the first thing would be to see if there was any interest within the MSU community. Any ideas on checking that out?
Last one, are local rush numbers available to anyone? If I asked MSU's local panhellenic (sp?) how many girls went through rush, got a bid, etc would they give it to me?? The best thing to do would be to call up and ask, which I will do as soon as the office is open Monday morning, I just thought someone on here might know if I'm wasting my time asking for information that can't be given out.
Thanks!
~Millie

OH YEAH OH YEAH!
There was one more thing I wanted to specifically ask all you alpha gams...is there any way I can find out about Alpha Gams currently at MSU? Chi chapter closed in 2000 or 2001 (can't quite remember at the moment) so I would assume there would be sisters still on campus. Also, there could be initiated members who transferred to Michigan State. Is there any way I can contact these girls (if they exist)?
I'm still not even sure I want to take on the responsibility of restarting a chapter, but I think it's a shame that your GLO doesn't have an active chapter on campus. I haven't met many Alpha Gams, but the ones I did were by far the classiest sisters out of the whole bunch, and if nothing else, I'd like to see the chapter re-opened for your own benefit. I've got 2-3 surgeries coming up in the next year, and my jaw will be wired shut for 8 weeks after one of them. And technically, I haven't recieved an acceptance letter to MSU yet (although I'm not too worried about it). So I am in no position to commit to anything. But I would like to find out any info I can.
I've emailed AGD IHQ, I will be emailing (or calling) MSU's local panhel, is there anywhere else I should look into?
Thank you!!

Millie,
Good luck with your quest. I know nothing about expansion or MSU, but I didn't want this thread to go unanswered. It is a great compliment that you are so interested in our fraternity. And I only wish the road was easier for you. If there is anything I can ever do, please just let me know.
Best of Luck.
