Check if you've been Subpoenad

So I was listening to the radio on the way to work yesterday and supposedly you can check on this site if your IP address has been subpoenad. Now, I want to check. But I don't want to give them my information and have them be like well we haven't done it yet, but obviously your worried about it, so we'll subpoena your file sharing butt this time around. I only have like 250-300 mp3s. I totally thought I was clear, until I read some msn link about one girl have FIVE files and getting subpoenad. Eeeek!

If anyone checks their info, tell me what it does!

I checked.

The website is run by an organization supporting file sharing and opposed to the RIAA's latest legal tactics.

Surf away!

I'm one of those bad people. I download but I don't share. The only reason I don't share is because it slows down my computer a lot, and it irriates the hell out of me. When I was sharing most of the time I would disconnect people because they were really slowing down my computer. Now I don't do it all.

ETA: I just checked my username and there is nothing on me. Actually I don't have to worry about it because it's my brothers user name, so he would get into trouble. I suppose my parents would get into trouble too because the internet is under their name.

Here is the site I used to get information and it has a good database of usernames that have been subpoenaed. They update their database based on the PACER system (PACER is the Federal Court's database of public records).

I just got an email from my school today saying that I'm using up network space, and if I am in fact downloading then I have to stop immediately as the university is lawfully obligated to hand me over to the authorities. I don't like that this is happening, but what choice do I have but to stop downloading?

Stop downloading, and write a letter to all of the big record companies, letting them know that you won't be purchasing a single CD from any of their artists in the future because of their lawsuits. Let your money do the talking.

Yeah, my mom woke me up telling me to watch Good Morning America today because they had a report about it-- I didn't wake up, but my sister did! Anyway, I checked on eff.org/, and while I'm not on the list, it said that you could still be on it even if you're not a match with eff's listings.

How are they going to enforce this. How much do you think they will fine you? Obviously they can't being suing people for millions of dollars (like they claim they're losing) because the majority of Americans, I would assume, don't have millions of dollars.

This is so ridiculous. There are better things lawyers and governments, and whom ever could be cracking down on. Child pornography comes to mind.

Shhhh....
I'm going to say this really quietly, so nobody will hear it without getting real close to their computer screen.

Ready?

Like it or not, all of you are breaking the law. And, it isn't the stars and other artists who you hurt the most. It's the janitors, and receptionists, and mail room people and all of the other who work for the record labels. That's where a large part of record sales receipts go, you know. To overhead.

Oh, and you might be interested to know that very few of the "big" record companies are making much money either. Some are in a fair amount of financial trouble.

So, think of this. Let's say that you are working your way through college selling photographs that you take. But the person who develops the pictures decides to make a whole lot of bootleg copies and give them away to your customers. Is that fair?

No. It isn't.

It isn't likely that anyone who is a "social" downloader will have a problem. But, the fact is, if you are caught...you're guilty.

That's what copyright is about. It's not hard to understand. People expect to be paid for the work they do.

Actually you are very wrong about where the money goes.

That isn't to say that the people who get the money don't deserve it.

--Edited to add--
If you want to get a better understanding of why your argument is very wrong, think of the argument baseball team owners use. They claim player salaries are the reason ticket prices are high and a lot even claim that they lose money. This is economic rubbish in its purest form.
--End--

At the end of the day just don't allow your computer to share files with others and download from other people. IF you download from foreigners who are exempt from this law, everything you do will be legal.

hey, i'm not an american...who wants some of my 13 gigs?

Good point rudey, legislating across borders is very difficult to police, if not impossible. Anything involving the internet; society is two steps behind in reaction.
