Gift For Goddaughter

My cousin has asked me to be the godmother of her daughter, and I couldn't be happier. I want to do something really special for her as she grows up and I was wondering if anyone had any idea of a really special gift for a godmother to give. There is this new thing I read about in the paper where you can buy 'points' that go towards tuition at a few hundred different colleges, but my mom said that she thought something like that was too impersonal. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am not sure how long you want to work on this gift or how much time you might want to put into it. My first thought was to start a scrapbook for her now. Put in a few pictures each year of her growing up, her activities, accomplishments, & both of your families over the years. Maybe put in a short note to her every year on her birthday, talking about your feelings about her as she matures.

It may not mean so much to her as a high schooler, but it will be more meaningful later. Scrapbooking can be fun without going totally crazed into the whole Creative Memories thing!

My mom and godmother are both Precious Moments nuts, so I've had a collection started for me since birth.

I love my collection because my curio cabinet is filled with memories reflecting life's accomplishments--birthdays, Confirmation, HS and college graduation, even getting my driver's license!

Just be there would be the biggest gift. I lost my godmother and I wish I spent more time with her.

Thetalady made a good point about picture, have pictures with you in them. Or of really special moments.

One idea: two friends of mine had an aunt who bought them pearls every year, one for their birthday, the other for Christmas. By the time they were 18, they each had a gorgeous strand of pearls - 26 perfectly matched beauties.

I'm sure you could do the same with a charm bracelet, or something else similar.

My sister-in-law does the pearls for each of my girls. She got the necklace, and buys a pearl for special events - birthday, dance recital, baptism, etc. They will have have a beautiful strand of pearls when they get older. Any kind of jewelry is good! Put it away until they are old enough to be responsible for it!

My daughters godmother buys them silver mint julep cups and has their initials engraved on them. She only recently started this, but by the time they are older they will have a full set of twelve. Other special gifts may include silver spoons, a silver baby rattle (they have some now with these wonderful chimes), a container for a first tooth, etc.

Buying stock is always good, especially if it is something that can be set up to reinvest. The girls initially had just five shares in one company, but at this point it has already doubled. Who knows where it will be in 10 years, and every little bit helps!

Thanks for all the idea. I really love the idea of buying pearls. I think that the scrapbook idea is great too, something a little extra to have for her when she gets older

Kinda off topic, but when I got married, I gave my flower girl an 18" strand of pearls. I understand that she's getting married this summer - and wearing the pearls as her "something old". I am so honored! *sniffle* Kelly was the first baby I ever held...

I love the pearl idea.

My paternal grandfather always gave me a savings bond on a big day, in addition to a little spending cash. I never got excited about the bonds then, but now that they're appreciating in value, he's going to be paying for a large chunk of my graduate school, and he's been gone 14 years. All those little gifts really added up.

my goddaughter, (who i'm so close with she is like my kid, but anyway) gets an angel themed gift for every event. for her birth i got her a crystal angel holding an amythst (her birthstone). for her baptism i got her a baby ring with an angel twisted into the metal. for her birthday i got her a gold necklace with an angel pressed coin pendant....etc.
she's going to be 5 at the end of the month and i've gotten her art, other pieces of jewelry, books, figurines, and other stuff. it's something sentimental for her to have for the future. but also, then for like her birthday and christmas and stuff she gets some sort of child-oriented gift as well because she's a little young to understand the concept. the thing is, i don't really have many other people to buy gifts for so i can afford to spend crazy amounts of money on her.

yay godchildren.

My grandfather gave me an unusal coin for special events. It sortof brings up the idea of coppers for good luck.
