Traveling to Cancun
Skee Wee Sorors! My twin sister (and soror) and I just celebrated our 30th birthday yesterday! We are going to Cancun to celebrate on July 20th. I wanted to check with you all to see if any of you have gone to Cancun and what are the hot spots/sites that we must see while there. Any suggestions?

Happy Birthday!
Although I'm not an AKA, I always check out the active topics. I just returned from a cruise, and we stayed in Cancun for an entire day.
There is a fun bar/grille/"clothesline" called "Carlos & Chalie's" down in town. ALL cabbies know of it, there are even signs for it in the back of cabs. It's a huge tourist location. The waiters are a lot of fun! It's called a clothesline because if you bring in a t-shirt (i don't think you have to be wearing it), they hang it on the ceiling and give you a free drink. It would be fun if you brought them an AKA shirt, which they could hang up and everyone would see! What a way to show your pride in your organization! I only wish I had known of it when I went. I saw several sorority shirts on the ceiling, as well as some pretty random ones. There weren't any "letter" shirts that I saw, mainly formal/philanthropy/etc shirts.
There are people of all ages (they check ID's--gotta be 18!), from 18--late adult. There were lots of people my parent's ages dancing and having fun like the teenagers!
Well, hope that helps. Sorry to barge in on your forum, but I just wanted to let you know that it's a lot of fun. Enjoy your trip!

My husband and I went to Cancun last year and we had a GREAT time! Here are a couple of places you should go: Xel Ha (a naural water park--you've got to see it to believe it--you can swim with the dolphins, feed the toucans and all kinds of wild stuff); Cozumel (it's a separate island, but you can take a ferry, it's beautiful, plan on spending a whole day sightseeing and shopping); and you have to go see the ancient ruins (I can't remember what they are called, but you'll see when you get all of the tourist info at the airport). That's all I can think of for now, but if I remember any more I will post. Also, take BUG REPELLENT!!! They sell it for like 8$ a can, 'cause they KNOW you're gonna need it. And, if you can, stay in an all inclusive hotel (Moon Palace is the BOMB!!! ), because some of the hotels are far from restaurants or only near Pizza Hut, McDonald's and other American food at HIGH prices-and I don't know about you, but I canstay in the US for that. Hope this info helps.

My sincerest apologies!
After rereading the post and seeing Legal Diva's reply, I realized that Carlos & Charlie's is in Cozumel, not Cancun. We went to both places and since they both start with a "C", I got them confused.
But to add to her post, I went to the ruins, they're called Tulum. (This I'm sure of! ) They're in Playa del Carmen (on the mainland). You can hop on a boat right in Playa del Carmen to go to Cozumel, which is about 25-30 minutes away. If you do decide to go to Cozumel, bring Dramamine!!!! (motion sickness stuff). The boat ride is a little choppy, but worth it!
Have a wonderful trip!

I am not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, but I sometimes like to view your boards. Anyway, I just got back from Mexico a month ago. It was fabulous! We didn't stay in Cancun, we stayed in a resort town called Puerto Aventuras which was about 45 min. away from Cancun. If you are going to do some traveling away from Cancun, I would suggest that you try Playa del Carmen (I think someone mentioned it already). There are fabulous restaurants (with LOVELY atmosphere by the way), and several MILLION shops and vendors! (not really, but they are everywhere) Playa del Carmen is also a fabulous beach and they have jet-skiing (out of this world!), banana boats (don't try it if you are afraid of being dropped in the middle of the ocean, because you WILL fall off....and there ARE sharks!)and wonderful snorkelling and swimming. The water is beautiful! We were standing in knee deep water and there were fish swimming all around us! Anyway, Cozumel is wonderful as well. It's a 45 min. ferry ride from Cancun or Playa. There is absolutely WONDERFUL snorkeling there! There are also great shops and the Mayan ruins are not far from the downtown area. You can rent scooters and ride there (it's about a half hour ride). The scooters were fun, however, one of my friends was in an accident (she ran into a tree) when we were on our way back from the ruins (it wasn't her fault, but the rental place said it was and we ended up having to pay $600 for the scooter and my friend was seriously hurt and had to go to the hospital.....not the thing to do in Mexico....so think about it before you do it.) Anyway, all in all it was a fabulous vacation and I would love to go again sometime. I hope you have fun and have a wonderful birthday celebration.
Blessed1
P.S. - Taxis are EVERYWHERE in Mexico.....you only have to THINK the word "taxi" and 10 of them will surround you. But they are pretty nice and give you a flat rate price before you get in.

If you do decide to stay in Playa del Carmen (which is not far from Cancun), consider the Royal Hideaway Resort and Spa. It's practically brand-new, all-inclusive, beautiful, relaxing and fairly quiet. My husband and I went there on our honeymoon last November and LOVED IT! The food, staff, rooms, and spa are all spectacular!
We never ventured out beyond going into town (we were honeymooning :-) ), but Cozumel, Tulum and other attractions are nearby. Another famous ruins site, Chicheni Tza (I KNOW I'm spelling it wrong), is further away, but we heard it was wonderful.
What I am saying, quiet, relaxing? Two beautiful, single AKA women? You all probably want to be where all the action is-Cancun! Have fun, sorors!

Soror Stunning Jade,
My hubby and I went to Cancun two years ago. We stayed at Tucancun Resort which is across from the Kukulcan Plaza. We toured the ruins of Chichen Itza which was an all day travel. Senior Frog's is a great night spot. They also have pretty good bus transportation if you want to ride the strip. You will have a wonderful time. Have a wonderful birthday Soror.
