Question Suffolk VA?

I need input! I just graduated from college and looking for teaching jobs. There's a job that I'm looking at in Suffolk VA (near Norfolk and Newport News) but I know next to nothing about the area. What can ya'll tell me about the area? Cost of living, average price of rent (I need an apt that would accomodate my rabbit)? What are the taxes like there? Starting salary would be around $32,000 . . . would this be enough for me to make a go of it in this area? Please help!

Being from Virginia and having a mom who is a teacher maybe I can help a little bit.

First.. seeing how you are from PA and are considering teaching in VA, do you know about the Praxis exam. I know there have been a few teachers who have begun teaching in her county without passing it yet (bc they were in need of teachers) but had to pass it within like two or three years.. if they didnt then they couldnt teach there any longer if I am correct. You should check into this first off.

Second.. I have some friends who live in the area and they seem to like... I am not sure though how it would be moving there.. though the cost of living in that area is fairly average and I think a decent apartment would be around 600-800 or so.. just from my knowledge..

Oh yeah, $32,000 would be fine in Suffolk. I don't know details as I've never lived there, but I work with people in the DC metro area (where the cost of living is much higher than in Suffolk) who live alone on about $32k. Good luck in your job search!

Thanks for the heads up! I got flying colors on my praxis exams and I checked out the licensing requirements for VA and it shouldn't be a problem for me to get certified there!
