Tell me About Memphis???
I'll be spending a few days in Memphis next week and I wondered if anyone could tell me the best place to get barbeque (or any other good restaurant, for that matter!)
I'm actually staying in Millington, TN, but plan to be mostly in Memphis.
Thanks!

Rendezvous (sp?) Ribs is a great place - went there and the food was amazing. They have the dry rub ribs, which are soooo good. With some baked beans and sweet tea, it's a hell of a good meal.

Definitely check out Rendzevous. You'll probably need to get someone to give you good directions, because it literally is in an alley downtown and it is pretty hard to find.
If you want a good burger joint, there are several Huey's. I'd recommend that as well.
Also, the Peabody has a bunch of restaurants and such that would be good for entertainment.
Alot of places on Beale have food, but they are more touristy places.
Luckily, all of these are within 1-2 miles of each other in the Downtown/Beale area. Definitely good times.

The Beale area is fun as hell - very toursity but very fun
I stayed in the Peabody when I was down there (it was for a Kappa Sigma national Conclave). If you want to get ultra-touristy, you can see the ducks marching from the elevators to the fountain at the hotel, it's a big tradition. I forgot what time that happens though.

Hey! Definately check out Rendezvous. It was the highlight of my last trip to Memphis. It was soooo good that I bought some dry rub from the resturant, and everytime I put it on chicken or ribs, I think of that amazing food. Our waiter was great, too. He was really friendly. It had great atmosphere, too! Be sure to try the red beans and rice!
Also (and this is general advice I'd give to anyone traveling anywhere) avoid the Hard Rock Cafe. I know it's familiar, but it doesn't give you the taste of local food and culture that a place like Rendezvous does. There were some other good places to eat on Beale Street, but overall, Rendezvous was the best.
If you get the chance, go to Graceland. It's not just for the Elvis fanatics. It's got great examples of 50's and 60's style. It made me long for the days of retro....
Enjoy Memphis!

For those interested in history, check out Mud Island and the Memphis Belle. (The Belle was the first B-17 to successfully complete 25 combat missions in WW II; it's named after the wife of the pilot, who was a native of Memphis.)

I recall the Butcher Shop Steak House on Front Street being pretty good. Too bad you won't be closer to Nashville!!

I know, Heather! When I found out I was going to Memphis, I checked out a Tennessee map to see if it was anywhere near you but, geez, it's not even in the same timezone! That's one long state you live in!
PS - Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Looks like Rendezvous Ribs is the place to try

Directions to Rendevous
Being a native Memphian, I can promise you the advice given to you is absolutely correct especially about the alley. LoL but it has great BBQ, it also was where the lawyers dine for lunch in the movie THE FIRM.
Directions are as follows:
Ride Interstate 240 to the Union exit heading west. Continue for about 5-7 minutes, once you see the Redbird Stadium on your left begin to slow down. You will pass 4th street then you will see the Greyhound Bus Station on your left, next you will cross Third Street. You will know Thrird immediately because it is lit up with The Red Birds front entrance. Large Baseball player in full swing this will be on your right. On the left will be a TGIFridays. On the other side of Third will be the Peabody lit up on left and a Denny's restaurant on the right. as soon and I do mean SOON as you cross Third look to your right. You will see the Holiday Inn select attached kinda to the Denny's, well in between Denny's and the entrance to the hotel garage is a dark alley, that looks as if nothing could be down there you want, but it will be your path to BBQ. Find parking and head off to feast your appetite. The door to the restaurant willl be on your left.
Hope you have fun in city on the bluff!!!
Oh yea Magic Johnson hosted a dinner party after the fight for plenty of the stars after the Tyson/Lennox fight so you know it has to be something for them to go down the alley

Nashville and Memphis are in the same time zone. Although you are right it is a long state. But the trip between the two cities can be made easily in 3-3 1/2 hours depending on your driving. Murfreesboro on the other hand add another hour.

I LOVE MEMPHIS!!!
I had the best time there these past few days; I hated to come home. I have never in my life met such friendly, polite people. I almost had a heart attack when the counter girl at McDonald's said, "Hi! What can I get you today" instead of mumbling some vague greeting like I normally get here in the Baltimore area. And they even say thank you!!!
And when you try to merge, people let you in.
And they smile at you!
And people in elevators nod and say hi!
I'd always wanted to try Sonic and I finally got to! I'm hooked on their strawberry limeade!
There are casinos nearby where I won $1,300 on the slot machines!!
Beale street! Wet Willie's!
A cool concert venue shaped like a pyramid!
The Peabody hotel and the duck march! And the fact that, although the Peabody lobby was packed with people who wanted to see the ducks, no one push or shoved and everyone was well-behaved!
Ribs! Oh, my, the Ribs they have there!!!
Many, many thanks to ms_elephante2k1! Your directions to Rendezvous Ribs were great; we would have NEVER found it on our own. That was one of the best meals I've ever had, I kid you not. I may just have to have some of those ribs Fed-Ex'd up to me And the atmosphere was great, too. Thanks again!!
