I have no idea what to call this thread

Do You have some Time for me?
I've written this Poem for you
About 99 red Balloons
from my Heart to the Horizon
Do You ever think of me
then I've written this Poem for you
of 99 red Balloons
and what has been, is what will come.

99 red Baloons
from my Heart to the Horizon
It dosen't matter what I felt,
There's something here from somewhere else
And now the War machine springs to Life
it focuses its eager Eyes
Focused on the Summer Sky
on 99 Red Baloons.

99 Ministers meet at 99 Descision Street
To worry, worry, somewhere scurry
Call the Troops out in a hurry!
"Its not what You've been trained for,
Its a brand new type of War."
Red China is on the Red Line
Discussing 99 Red Balloons.

99 Knights of the Air
Mount super high tech Jet-Fighters
You'd give your all for Captain Kirk
Look at that pretty Firework
The Neighbors have done nothing
and how could anyone blame them?
I wish that I would have said:
"They're bombing us! Who gives two shits,
If they're Allies or Soviets?"
Our beloved City is in Ruins
because of 99 Red Balloons.

99 long Years of War
I'll never get a chance to rest
There are no Generals anymore,
So who cares if You did your best?
The World is a giant Graveyard
I'll never find a Place to lie;
But if I find a Red Balloon,
I'll think of You, and let it fly.

Sorry, I should have clarified my reference! The below song, "99 Red Balloons" sung by the German singer Nena was one of the top songs in early 1984. There are some similarities between the lyrics of this song and the words to your poem.

You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got.
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone.
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, Something's out there.
Floating in the summer sky.
99 red balloons go by.

99 red balloons.
floating in the summer sky.
Panic bells, it's red alert.
There's something here from somewhere else.
The war machine springs to life.
Opens up one eager eye.
Focusing it on the sky.
Where 99 red balloons go by.

99 Decision Street.
99 ministers meet.
To worry, worry, super-scurry.
Call the troops out in a hurry.
This is what we've waited for.
This is it boys, this is war.
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 Knights of the air
Ride super-high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a superhero.
Everyone's a Captain Kirk.
With orders to identify.
To clarify and classify.
Scramble in the summer sky.
As 99 red balloons go by.

99 dreams I have had.
In every one a red balloon.
It's all over and I'm standing pretty.
In this dust that was a city.
If I could find a souvenier.
Just to prove the world was here.
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go.

It's a great song - both the original and the remake by Goldfinger (which does the song in English)

Now that was the song I remember back in '84. I was 11 at the time.

I was looking at a website called Get Lyrics and looked up 99 Luftballons. Although I had a year of German, I could see that English translation came close to the lyrics posted by Optimist Prime. The lyrics of the 1984 English hit were completely different from the first. Here are the German lyrics, but a few words were spelled phonetically.

Hast du etwas Zeit fuer mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Denkst du vielleicht g'rad an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied fuer dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Und dass sowas von sowas kommt

99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man fuer Ufos aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
'ne Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn's (sie?) war
Dabei war'n da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons

99 Duesenjager
Jeder war ein grosser Krieger
Hielten sich fuer Captain Kirk
Das gab ein grosses Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fuehlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons

99 Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich fuer schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen: Kring und wollten Macht
Mann, wer hatte das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen 99 Luftballons

99 Jahre Krieg
Liessen keine Platz fuer Sieger
Kriegsminister gibt's nicht mehr
Und auch keine Duesenflieger
Heute zieh ich meine Runden
Seh' die Welt in Truemmern liegen
Hab' 'nen Luftballon gefunden
Denk' an dich und lass' ihn fliegen
