Your Chapter Designation...

Just wondering how you refer to your chapter designation? Example:

I was initiated at Beta Epsilon, but all the members refered to it as BE, as in, "Whats your BE number?"

I transfered to Phi Upsilon, where the same question would be asked in a slightly different manner, "Whats your PhiUp (pronounced fie-oop) number?"

mine is easy...just Zeta Phi 708.....

Usually we kept things informal. At most we would refer to it as Gamma Zeta.

But 95% of the time it was "the house."

As in:
We need to have a house meeting.
The house needs to recruit more guys.
What's the house event for tonight.

and so on...

It also drives Brothers nuts when they ask what Zeta, and I just answer LX. No, We know you are a LX, but what Zeta!

My Zeta is Zeta-Upsilon. I don't remember anyone saying, "What is your ZU number?" It was always, "What is your Zeta number? I always assumed, till now, that is what everybody asked. I thought the request referred to the term "Zeta" that we use instead of "Chapter." I always write it as "ZU" but never say it that way. I am alone with this practice or is it common with other Zetas?

Its the same for my chapter. It is just what is your zeta number? Never what's your ZE #? I thinks its just easier to say, but confuses all the other GLO's when we talk about Zeta #'s, they just can't understand it.

Asking, "What's your Zeta number?" would be proper within any chapter, but we would be more likely to ask among ourselves, "What's your Beta-Nu?", and not even bother saying the word "number".

BTW, most folks leave out the hyphen when writing, which is usually not a problem until someone's chapter ends in "Zeta", for instance Epsilon-Zeta (North Dakota). Is it Epsilon Zeta (U. Penn) or Epsilon-Zeta (North Dakota)? Marshall is a killer! Is it Zeta Zeta or Zeta Zeta Zeta????

A couple of you missed the point of my question.

I wasnt specifically asking about membership or zeta numbers. I only used that as an EXAMPLE.

The question was, "how do you refer to yourself as a chapter?" Do you use some form of a shorthand in your chapter? And in what cases do you use the abbreviation if you do?

I have heard several variations:

1) Actual name, like Alpha Mu Zeta
2) Abbreviation with initials, like BE
3) Abbreviation of the words; like Phi Up

It depends - for roll call before meeting some guys like to shorten it to 'EE' while others prefer the full 'Epsilon Epsilon'... I've never heard an abbreviation of words... finally when talking to other chapters the long form is always used.

Finally in comparison to JonoBN41's post - the guys always use the term "Zeta number" - I think partly because we have had are share of Brothers from other chapters that had transfered to ours over the years... so from roll-calls it's easy to remember that the McGill guys mostly go with 'II' not 'Iota Iota' - whereas the UWO and Alberta guys always use the long forms, 'Delta Eta' and 'Epsilon Rho' repsectively.

At Zeta-Upsilon Zeta we heard on occasion the phrase, "ZUZ Does!" This apparently was a take off of an old soap commercial in the 1950s.

We used terms like "ZU," "ZUZ," or "Zeta-Upsilon" in general conversation about the Chapter.

We go by Lambda Chi.

Yep it is hard when We are Lambda Chis with Lambda Chi as Chapter designation.

How about KS, SX Zetas?

Gents, I'm about to share w/all of my GC Lamb Chop brethren the deep, dark reason the guys from Beta-Omicron @ Illinois State always ask each other, "What's your BOZ number?"...

Okay, I lied--I honestly don't know why. All I can say is that it's been going on since the early days of the chapter (chartered 1969).

The Chapter Consultants and ELC's that have made their way through beautiful downtown Normal, IL have all wondered about this, as well. Even though my friends from Campuspeak would hate to hear me say it, "We've always done it this way."

Yes, I've been told by more than a few people that my actual email designation s/b "bo130", or more correctly "B-O 130". I even got a quizzical look from the guy who sold me my pin back in the dark ages--he thought the engraving should just be "BO 130".

Nope, it's always been BOZ, and even our founding father isn't sure of why it happened this way. On the other hand, it was kinda cool to have had the Northwestern alumni anoint me as "Boz" when I started working w/them 8 years ago.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it...BTW, if any of you UG posters missed your regional conferences this year, you should definitely try to make it the summer conference @ Maryland/College Park.

In my chapter we would say "what is your bond number?"

That's how it goes here at Oklahoma City Univ (Theta-Delta).


It gets fun around Intramural Football time because whenever we score a touchdown it's a Theta-Delta or a "TD!".

At Kappa-Omega its "What's your Zeta?" or "What's your
Zeta number?" Some of the old guys (Earp's era) just say
"what's your number?"

But the answer is given as "KOZ 123" (english pronounced
letters)

One of my "pet peeves" is when guys refer to the chapter
as "Kappa Omega Zeta Chapter".....which is redundant since
Zeta means chapter....that's like saying "Kappa Omega Chapter
Chapter". But oh well, bad habits are hard to break!

I think that happens at alot of other zetas too.
