Time consuming?

Hi, I am an incoming college Freshman in Louisiana, before I make a definite decision to RUSH, I want an insider perspective on the amount of time that goes into being in a sorority. Most girls I talk to that attend my college are trying to recruit me and say that being in a sorority does not overrule your life. From those of you who are in a sorority, can you please help me in understanding exactly what I am getting into before I dive into it only to be disappointed. I am strongly considering DZ at my college after meeting many of the girls who best represent me and my morals. Thanks to all who listened!

Alaina-
Good for you, for doing some research before jumping in! What I have to say might sound cliche-but it's true. Being in a sorority is what you make of it-it's up to you to decide how much time you want to put into it.

There will be events that are required, and things you won't want to miss...at times (like recruitment), it will feel like your entire life revolves around sorority life, but in the end, it is all worth it (at least I thought it was). Being Greek can make your college experience that much more enjoyable--you will have more vivid memories of football games, finals, etc., because you shared them with your sisters.

Anyone who tells you it isn't time consuming is lying, but it doesn't have to rule you. I worked a part time job, was involved in student government & my professional organization, choir and was the school mascot. Ended up serving as secretary, VP of Recruitment and President of my chapter...it was all in all a very rewarding experience...and yes, I felt at times like DZ was my sole purpose for existing! But I loved virtually every minute of it.

Good luck to you!

Hi,
YES...it takes time, but most of it's fun. I really enjoyed my DZ experience in college. The time it takes is worth it, and honestly, it won't seem like much because the sisters will become your friends and when was hanging out with your friends something you checked your watch while doing?

As a new member, you will be learning a lot about the sorority, the chapter, your new member class sisters, working on philanthropy projects, coordinating various activities, etc. You will also be expected to keep up your grades, be well rounded with perhaps a job or another student activity, be the best co-ed you can be (ie: don't embarrass the sorority), and look cute while doing it (JUST KIDDING!).

The benefits are great leadership possibilities, wonderful social opportunites, life skills that will help you in the future, and friends that you will take with you after college.

My favorite thing about DZ is the sisters that I have met AFTER college. My alumnae life is wonderful. My alumnae chapter(s) sisters are my best friends. I never imagined it, but it's turned out that way. Delta Zeta is for life!!

Good luck!!

Sorry to crash this board.

Being in any sorority (DZ or any other) is as time consuming as you and the chapter make it. Events such as rush and greek week take up alot of time but only last a week or two. In my chapter there would be weeks where all I did was attend a meeting once a week and other weeks where I was doing something every day. Of course, if you are in a leadership position, you will be spending alot more time on sorority stuff.

When you go through rush, ask the sisters what a typical week is like.

Ditto what everyone else said, but I also want to add that I had 18+ hours most semesters, a part-time job, a long-distance boyfriend, family that I saw a lot, plus an honor society that was active in the community, and I was still able to be active in DZ.
