Good Reason to join
Hello , lately I've been doing some research on BGLO sororities, and most of my friends are very interested in Delta Sigma Theta. That's cool with me. But, I said I was interested in Zeta Phi Beta and most of them started to make comments towards the Zeta's like they weren't known, or popular etc. So, I said you guys are only joining for popularity purposes, because you don't have to get into a sorority for that. How do go about telling them don't get into something for the wrong reason? I hope I'm not out of line in any way
Thank You

Okay Cherish I'm about to tell you like it is. YOU CANNOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS! If they are joining DELTA for popularity, they will soon be found out. DELTA just like all the rest of the BGLO's was founded to uplift our black community. We only want people who will work in our respective organizations. Now if they do it for popularity and they get in and work their butts of that's another thing. ALL GREEKS HAVE MEMBERS THAT HAVE JOINED FOR POPULARITY REASONS. It's not just your friends here who want to pledge DELTA. You can't worry about them. Let them do their own thing. You have your own thing to worry about, ZETA. And another thing, you need to be comfortable with your own choices in life. It sounds like you're not all that comfortable with your choice to be a ZETA. I still ocassionally get teased my relatives because I didn't become a QUE. But you know what, I am comfortable with my decision to be a KAPPA. If ZETA's truly in your heart, then go for it and don't look back. And to your friends, if they are only about stepping, strolling, and wearing DELTA paraphanalia every single day of the week they will be discovered at RUSH! Most of those people are transparent anyway. They won't make line. For GREEKS, SERVICE IS FIRST AND FOREMOST! No matter how we phrase it in our mottos etc., it is. Hope I was of some help to you.

Oh and another thing to tell your friends, ZETA is very popular in a lot of places. Just because they might not run the yard where you attend school doesn't mean they're not popular on a national level. Tell them to go down to the University of Florida. That's BLUE & WHITE country baby! What's up to the BLUE & WHITE FAMILY!

NUPE4LIFE- What's up Mr. Crimson and Cream!!! You know that Blue and White is representing !! (There is a big blue and white weekend next weekend in Gainesville, FL. and it's going to be off the chain!)
Cherish- NUPE4LIFE's response is dead on. You make your choices in life. If your friends are trying to join an organization because it's popular, they are in for a rude awakening. Being in an NPHC organization isn't about popularity, it's about upholding the principles of that organization!
There are plenty of Zeta's nationwide and we are representing in our communities, and doing good work, and that's what really matters. Not the stepshows, or 'running the yard' (not that we don't excel at those things also) but it's not our focus. Nor is is the focus of AKA, Delta, and SGRho. None of our orgs need any T-shirt wearers! If Zeta is truly in your heart than nothing will deter you from your quest. Good Luck!

Girl do your research, pray and let your heart and the Lord show you the way. Basically, to put it bluntly f**k what other people say. If you love Zeta and you love what they stand for go for it, there are over 100,000 Zetas worldwide, so you will have a strong sisterhood behind you and the world ahead of you
I'm sorry for being Blunt so to say, but I hate when people don't realize that quality is far better than quanity. weather you have 200,000 or 100,000 it's what you feel in your heart. and each and everyone of us is different so go with were you feel at home

Cherish, girl let me tell you people will always have something say no matter what. Whether it is Delta, Zeta, Sigma, or AKAs. Thats why you choose the one that is right for you. My org of choice is and always has been DST and I have had people talk mess about them. I have had people say the most stupid things about which org I should join, instead of. Believe it or not a few people have even told me I should have chosen Zeta. Alot of people are biased depending on the org they are in or that they want to join. They are all great but you can only have one, and that is the one that you feel is in your heart. Even if you have family memebers or friends that choose a different one you go with your gut. If Zeta is in your heart girl go for it and trust me you chose a wonderful and well-known sisterhood to be a part of.

Dear Cherish,
You raise a very intersting and valid point; one that will probably plague ALL BGLO's until the end of time! Every organization consists of inactive members, t-shirt wearers, and public service workers. Speaking as a PROUD member of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc and the best friend of a Zeta, I say go with your heart.
Always remember, "Membership is a lifetime commitment."
As for your friends who are interested in Delta merely for popularity reasons, tell them that Delta is not a "social club." It is a PUBLIC SERVICE ORGANIZATION!!!
In so far as "Quantity vs. Quality," I think every BGLO can argue the fact that there are members who DO NOT live up to the "quality" aspect WE ALL look for, whether the organization's membership is 200,000 or 80,000!!!! (just my $19.13)

As a member of the Illustrious Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, INCORPORATED!!!!!!!, my best advice to you is to keep YOUR business to YOURSELF. You may have heard the term "discretion" used in these forums a few times. Here is but another reason to exercise "DISCRETION".
PS...You cannot tell your friends why to be interested in any organization. Its a personal choice. And their reasons are as valid as your reason.

I hope you didn't take that the wrong way sisterfriend, I was just pointing out that weather there are 80,000 or 200,000 members we all (and I beleive I can safely speak for us all here) want quality members not just a large quanity.
I think we would all rather take in 20 great soon to wonderful and active members rather than 100 "t-shirt" wearing, "only showing up at a party" sorors.
