Rush
I am interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha only. It's just something that I know suits me. However I have a question/concern. I don't know about everywhere else, but at my school the soroities don't hold informationals like the frats do, they only have rushes. Well actually that's not true I know that the Zetas and the SGRhoes have had informationals once but the Delta's and AKA's haven't had one since I've been here and I'm a junior. Anyone if a woman does not have the option of going to an informational in order to get a feel for the sorority and so they go to rush strictly for informational purposes, why are they forever associated with that particular organization and most likely rejected by the other. I say this because I know a girl who attended the Delta rush last year but found it wasn't for her. so when another rush came around she went but was rejected because they knew she had gone to the Delta rush. I know this is very long but I just want to know why it's considered bad to attend another rush, find out it's not for you, and then seek memebership elsewhere. Your comments/thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Daruler, At my school it was not a good idea to attend another Sororities rush because a rush or interest meeting as we call it is not the same among Black Sororities as it is in White ones. Our interest meeting/rush means that you are INTERESTED in JOINING. If you are not interested in joining i don't recommend attending a Rush, there are other ways to find out if you are interested in a Sorority. We did not have informationals since it was the responsibility of the aspirant to seek out information and with so many interested candidates there is no need for us to try to interest anyone. Perhaps the Sororities on your campus see attending another group's rush as a sign of interest and of course no one wants a aspirant who was rejected or chooses their Sorority as second best. I hope that helps, this may vary from campus to campus.

Pink Bunny,
Thank you for your response. i do realize that rush as it pertains to Black sororities is different than white. I was asking more of a way as saying that a girl who does not know this makes the "mistake" of attending a rush, but after that is blacklisted so to speak from other sororities. I guess a better way for me to have phrased it would be to ask why can't a girl who did not know any better be given a second chance?

People should think of a Rush as a "formal declaration of interest" in a BGLO. That is why you are urged to attend as many of the organization's activities as possible, get to know the members, and do your research before attending a Rush. I have to agree with Pink Bunny that the person may be seen as someone who was rejected or choosing the sorority second on her list.
