Cliques in the sorority
Hi Ladies,
I was wondering what your sorority's do about a lot of cliques in your sorority? We have a lot and it makes a few of the girls who are not in cliques feel left out (I talked to one sister last night and she felt so sad that a lot of the girls don't hang out with her just their little clinques). I am also one of the girls who is not in a cliques because I don't see the point of being in one, I know there are sisters that like to hang out together but it should not make other sisters feel out of place. I am to the point where I don't care about "high school" stuff like that. I just do what I'm suppose to do for my positions and try to be every sisters friend but if they only want to hang out with just the same sisters then it's their lost.
That's my opinion, what's yours?

Wow, I could go on forever about this topic, but I won't...I will try to just get straight to the point. A few years back, almost the entire sorority was divided between two cliques. There were the girls who deemed it necessary to come to every event drunk and there were the girls who really tried and wanted the sorority to be awesome. Let's just say, the first clique made it really impossible to enjoy sorority life...mainly because they were always choosing who the "newest" member of their bunch would be. After a very heated arguement and several attempts to make this bunch of girls act properly and represent Phi Sigma Sigma, the group of girls decided to disaffiliate. I believe that there were 7 of them. At first, the remainder of the chapter was upset that we were losing so many sisters. But after they left, we moved on...and the chapter expanded to the best it has ever been. Although there are groups of people who get along better with each other and hang out more with certain people, my chapter has tried to remain clique-less. Events such as sisterhood and socials really make the difference in how people interact with one another. Of course, nothing is fall-proof...but after all the crap we went through, every sister makes an attempt to be friendly to each other.
(I hope all this makes sense....it is really early in the morning!)

hmmm, interesting topic.
a few weeks ago a sister brought this up to me. Her chapter has been the largest it's been in several years adn she was commenting on how the bigger it got the more cliques seemed to come around (and techniquely this is a small chapter - around 20 members)
it's not that they all don't like each other, and they do hang out with each other, its just outside of phi sig stuff they seem to be more particular with which girls they hang out with...
well, for the most part, this type of clique-iness isn't so bad....we all have our natural affinities....but it turns out things go wrong when one sister disappoints the rest....i think that's all i'll say about that....
there is no way to rid a chapter, or any org, of all cliques...it's just natural behaviour. All we can do is keep having sisterhood socials and hope that the women understand that we are all sisters and we all deserve the same respect and attention.
i'm not really good at this kind of thing....i was never really cliquey...

there are cliques in sorority
in fact, when i joined, i realize that some of my sisters don't like to go out to the bars
they like to sit at home and watch movies or drink
i'm a dancer who doesn't need alcohol to drink
and i have sisters who driink and party
so, it's all about finding a medium
i settled it by inventing schmooze night
the ones who are over 21 all get together at someone's house to drink on a friday night
we'll drink and have fun from 8 PM until 11 PM
then, those who want to head to the bar will leave
the others stay if they want
but we always give them the option of joining us
so, tell the girls who feel left out to find a medium
sometimes it means changing themselves a little
it's all about growing up and compromising

We do have cliques, we never used to have obvious ones, but now theyre more like the older sisters and the younger sisters. And then smaller ones...

I feel we've gotten more cliquey since I joined last year... of course I think we're about 7 people bigger I mean it sucks because yeah, we all know you can't hang out with all your sisters all the time... but that fact shouldn't make people feel left out ,and personal "drama" between sisters shouldn't divide the sorority A la 5th grade... if you are friends with her you cant' be friends with me....

i think moosegirl has it right, its not cliques so much as different tastes and whatnot. luckily, alcohol is not so much an issue... we all love it! (kidding)
our house has 110 girls in it, so its inevitable that there are going to be groups within the big group. luckily, we all get along really well... you hear so much about dramas within the sisterhood, and we really dont have much of that, which is amazing given the sheer number of girls. i feel so lucky though that for the most part we're pretty conflict free.
i think cliques are only a big deal if you make an issue of it. as long as everyone's getting along, it doesnt really matter.
