Coke, pop, soda, etc.
Okay, I am in Kentucky and every carbonated beverage that is a cola product here is referred to as a Coke... Mt Dew, Dr Pepper, etc.
For instance, when there are mutiple people in a car at a drive thru you would ask them
"What kind of coke do you want with that"
This is more than accepted. Pop and soda are from people up north and they argue about it more than we do, but it still makes you an outsider if you call something a pop or soda here.
Any thoughts.....

Many texans also refer to carbonated beverages as "coke".
My boyfriend is originally from Washington state, and when he moved to Texas, he didn't understand why we called it "coke" instead of "soda" or "pop". He's been in Texas for awhile and has since changed his ways

LOL I grew up in upstate NY and will always be a SODA drinker.. I moved to the midwest (IN) 10 years ago, and they all say pop...but it's still soda for me. As far as I'm concerned, "Pop" is a sound, not a drink. Heheheh.

Growing up in Los Angeles we called everything Coke. My mom moved to Washington when I was in HS and up there they call everything pop. It drives me NUTS! It's caused me to start saying soda b/c if you say "what kind of coke do you want?" they look at you like you're nuts.

Here in Maryland, we call it soda. Everytime I hear someone call it pop, I crack up laughing because it's funny to me Or we say what we are drinking...can you refill my Mountain Dew or whatever.

It's POP!!!! Soda Pop is acceptable with soda being okay. Can't comprehend "coke" like in the following situation.
server: what kinda coke you want?
southerner: Dr. Pepper
That makes no sense!!!
It'd be like saying, "what kind of Budweiser do you want?" "oh, I'll have a Coors" it just doesn't work that way!

It'll always be "pop" to me! Although I ask for soda unless I'm home in Pittsburgh. I've lived in many places and am pretty adaptable

I always used to say "Coke" then after hanging out with the brothers from our University of Maine chapter at our Fraternity's Leadership Conference, picked up their habit of callign it a "soda.'" Ever sense then, I have called it that. My mom and sister give me grief.
Damn Yankees.
BTW, there are even differences about the way things are called in state. For instance, what do you call the side roads next to a freeway, that are used for getting on and off of the freeway that connect you to the side streets? In San Antonio, theyre "access roads," in Houston, they're "feeder" roads, in Dallas they're "service" roads, in Austin its "frontage" road.
Damnedest thing.

Midwesterners (especially Wisconsinites) are stereotyped as saying "pop" all the time, but I think that in reality, "soda" is just as common.
I prefer soda. Or like James, I often refer to it as "diet something," as in
"Do you want anything to drink?"
"Just grab me a diet something."

It's pop to me. If it's a brand name, I'll say, "Can you get me a Diet Pepsi?" If it's the generic kind, "Grab me a diet pop."
