Computer Question

Quick question.

What will happen if I compress one of my drives in my computer?

I've heard that the files will still be there, but, I won't be able to open them. Clarification please?

I know nothing about "compressing" file, but I often clean my system by defragmenting it. It compresses the files though I've never noticed not being able to open them afterwards.

Is this what you're attempting to do?

most likely, you mean you're going to use some software to compress files into a .zip (or .rar or etc) directory to save space. In that case, you can't open them w/out decompressing.

Depends on how you do it. If you have Windows compress your drive (I assume you're on Windows - if not, then please disregard what I have to say), then yes, you will still be able to view your files. If you compress all of your files using WinZip or some other program, then you will only be able to view your files through that program.

Angry New Computer Question

Okay, my computer, which I bought my freshman year, is not long for this world. The amount I'd spend on buying upgrades isn't even worth the current value.

For those of you who have made the switch--either way:

Mac or PC?

I can't wait to see the geeks that answer the debate on the PC vs. Mac issue.
