Question Your Eggs

I was checking my email on yahoo when I saw this little side ad for egg donors and surrogates. They pay big bucks. Would you ever consider giving up an egg? Do you think its the same as men donating sperm?

I personally will be keeping my children.

A friend of mine recently donated her eggs. After months of consultations and interviews with the prospective parents, she was injected with fertility hormones that turned her into a monster because she was in so much pain. Her eggs were eventually removed and implanted to the other woman, but she unfortunately miscarried.

Despite everything she went through the first time, she's doing it again...and she's getting another $3500.

The money is very tempting, especially when you're a broke college student. I don't think I could live with myself if I donated my eggs to someone else.

Hmmm....

I won't say Never, but I will say if I did decide to do something like this, it would be strictly for the "good of the cause" and not the money.

What do I mean? I mean that I might donate my eggs to help famalies/couples that are unable to have children.

I cannot imagine being a woman who sincerely wants to have children, but for various medical reasons cannot.

On one hand, I agree helping to produce a child that is biologically part yours must be tough to up and "give" that relationship/rights to contact away.

But on the other hand, it's also selfish of me to deny another woman the joy of motherhood when it is medically possible for that woman to NOT have to miss out on that experience.

Besides I don't plan on having children for a while now, so all the eggs I'm currently producing are being "wasted" for lack of a better word. It's basically saying I'd rather let my eggs die/go to waste than improve the quality of life for another woman/family.

I'm not saying run out and donate every egg your not using. But it is something I would consider doing. Because if I was the woman who couldn't have children on my own, I don't know how I would feel. (probably awful!)

What must something like that (not being able to have kids) do to a woman's self-worth and value perception? If you as a woman are incapable of producing children. That is a central piece to being a woman. Being able to produce offspring.

I did consider doing this. The only thing that stopped me was my age.

Yeah the money is nice. I've seen ads offering as much as $5,000. While I don't think I could do, would it be that bad considering that they go to waste (for lack of a better term) every month anyway??

I guess it would be a nice thing to do...

But harvesting eggs ain't even in the same league as sperm donation. Women have to take hormones, risk gaining weight and have surgery for the egg(s) to be harvested. If someone wanted to do that, I don't see anything wrong, since it helps someone out. Do I see myself doing it? Maybe when I was in my college years, I could have done it, but I am not so quick to get under the knife for a few thousand dollars these days

I've thought about this idea over the years, but I still don't think I'm capable to giving up a part of myself that will be somewhere else across the country or on the other side of town. I see the other side of the coin where a couple may have a chance of having a child thanks to my donation. I just don't think my eggs will be used for that purpose, even with that much money involved.

Personally, I'm a bigger proponent of adoption considering that there are some children who may not ever become a part of a family. Yes, some parents would rather have their own flesh and blood in the form of a little one, but there are so many young people and infants who would love to be in a family.

I think that adoption is a great thing, too. I have considered adoption although I am perfectly able to have kids. I think it is a really great blessing in the lives of kids who otherwise would spend their childhoods in foster care, moving from home to home.

i would donate a kidney to someone who needed it without hesitation.

i don't think i could ever donate something which would evolve into a living, breathing human being who looked like me but i wouldn't be able to have contact with. and not knowing if there was really someone out there or if the implantation didn't work would haunt me.

i WOULD donate my eggs if i knew they were being used for research and would never turn into a person.that i could live with. god bless women who are able to donate an egg for couples that need it.

Ladies,

Sad to say but my eggs are old! And I don't like feeling pain at all so I probably wouldn't have even considered doing something like that even for a billion dollars.
