Affirmative action

Hey sorors and visitors. I haven't been on the board in a while, but I'm posting to find out how everyone feels about the affirmative action cases as of late. This is extremely important to me, seeing as I attend the University of Michigan. The things I hear people say disturb me, because I don't understand how such educated people are so blind to the history of their country. I have so much to say on this topic, but I will let you speak first before I post. One more thing...I would encourage everyone with a car to head down to DC on April 1st. This is going to be a big event in the nations history. Don't be complacent. Don't be apathetic. If your parents and grandparents were, you prrobably wouldn't be where you are today. Hope to hear some good viewpoints

I think we should stand up and fight for what our parents and others before us have paved the way. We have the equal opportunity to get the same education as any non Africian American in this country. Now some hippocrates want to try and limit this opportunity.

I will be in attendence on March 31st at D,C. we are going to sleep outside on the steps to make sure no one gets in that building and everyone else from my school will be there early on the 1st. This is something that we as African Americans can not let roll over. Without affirmative action "the man" can do whatever he wants. Hopefully I'll see some of you there. I'll be in my blue and gold to let them know that SgRho reprhosented.

Philosophical idea: I think if we could move towards a society that is respectful of other cultures, yet color blind, then we will not need affirmative action.

Reality check: We need affirmative action because society tends to make judgements based on color/economic/gender status. Affirmative action is needed because it levels the playing field some what.

I'll stop here because I could go on.

It would be really nice if someone would provide a direct link to the AA cases that should be a concern for all people of color.
However, we all have to stand for something or we will fall for anything.

No, I was at work, however, there was a very large crowd of college and high school students of color in attendance. As a matter of fact, the media reported that this was the second greats serge of Civil Right's marchers since the original movement of the late 50s and 60s.

I don't know how many people know this, but it is a fact that affirmative action helps more women than any other minority group... Therefore, I am all about it

Don't be afraid, soror. You can always be like me. Shoot, I contact lawmakers on the local, state and federal level and voice my concerns when stuff like this comes up. The key is making your voice heard. It is your right as a constituent.

Even in a time like this, when we are facing the dark ages of civil rights (the Bush administration has a crystal clear record of hostility towards legislation that protects the rights of minorities AND women), we who are educated (in how the government works) need to hold all of our elected officials accountable, and teach those who aren't educated how to do the same.

i know i am late on this one, but on April 1st, more than a few of us here at the University of Florida rallied on our school president's door step at Tigert Hall to send a message to the community, state(especially old governor Bush!) and the rest of the country that we are taking this AFFIRMATIVE ACTION thing seriously!
it is especially important that we are proactive, whever we are becaue at an internationally renown school like UF that is bringing all kind of research dollars and claiming that diversity is an important issue, we don't always see those in leadership positions following what their words are saying. We are 44,000+ deep at UF, but less than 5,000 are African-Americans; the incoming class of Blacks dropped for real once Gov. Bush instated that ONE FLORIDA plan. the incoming classes of African Americans seriously dropped and has barely rebounded. We need to rally together and let our voices be heard, whever we are! We actually started a petition on campus to try to get our university president to take a STAND on affirmative action, hoping that as a leader of such a prestigious public univserity that he will persuade others in leadership to do the same! holla!

Thanks for giving me the update! I didn't see anything on the news about it and I was curious to see what happend.
