Can a song cross all genre borders?
They play the new Sheryl Crow & Kid Rock song 24/7 on ALL radio stations here -- country, hip hop, easy listening, rock. Can a song truly be classified in all genres? I could see where it is possible, but I don't think this song is the case. Thoughts?

Gosh, that's a hard case to make. Incidentally, I haven't heard the song you are referring to, so I can't comment on it.
I can see it being true for strictly the SONG, but when you get into the performers, I'd be hard pressed to argue the point. I've known of songs that are released after the initial "hit" by a different artist and they seem to take off, but the same artist in different venues???
The greatest leap in my mind would be a crossover from country to hip hop. Yet, if there was a really strong social statement in the lyrics, I could see the possibility.
Just a thought-Maybe they both draw from opposite ends and meet in the middle making their duet all encompassing.
OK all our DJs out there, you've got the experience to shed some light here. What do you all think?

Well, certain rappers have proven that classical music can cross genres

Haha! Exactly!
As far as I know, that song has never been played on either of the Chicago hip hop stations...thankfully.

It depend on your definition of crossover. If you mean different culture, there are lots. Mickey Hart and Planet Drum had differet percussion instrument from all over the world together and it's great music. But different genre, i think its impossible to do it. I can think of the Passenger (Bono, Edge, Brian Eno and Pavaroti)where opera and rock meet. Then you got various metal/rap combo. Countr and rock is always seen as a good combo with bands such as Lynard Skynard.
I think the Jamband Genre is perhap the people that could have the greatest potential to incorporate all music well. Look at String Cheese Incident - It's basically Jazz/Bluegrass/Rock. Then you have Project Logic where a hip hop dj teams up with jazz, rock and blue grass musicians. it's definately a good combo. I should've became a concert promoter.

I'm not really sure I entirely understand the question, but I can't conceive of any given recording crossing all genres. Perhaps the same song, recorded by a number of different artists -- but given the number of genres (All over the world, not just here) is really hard to imagine.
Years ago, there was one song that was played by almost every radio station in the United State -- regardless of format:
The Star Spangled Banner was played at sign-on and sign-off.

Pretty much all FM's are 24/7 these days, but there are still AM's that have to sign off by law to "protect" other AM's from interference.
A few years ago there were only a few 24/7 stations.

If Possible, I would like to see Dixie Chicks and TLC do a duet. That would be interesting. Maybe I'm crazy, but anything in the music world is possible.

This made me realize that I'm gettin old. I would venture to guess that you also don't remember when TV stations would go off the air too? They did the same thing, National Athem, some type of PSA then flat line.
Man...I'm old!!

I was being sarcastic, remmember them in the early 80s too. Then we had cable with those old school boxes, not the digital but the one where you press which channel you want and you had lever to choose which row you want. Back then MTV played music.
