Majors/career goals??

I am sitting here at work and I was just wondering what everyone else is going to college for. What is/was your major while in school and what would you like to do with your degree upon graduation?

I went to college with intentions of going to pharmacy school. I really wanted to get into drug research and development. So, I had no choice but to make Chemistry my major and go from there. However, in March of my senior year (of college) I decided that I didn't want to go to pharmacy school anymore. I wanted to work in the real world in a laboratory setting or something like that.

So, I graduated in May 2002 with my BS in Chemistry. I continued to work at Red Robin Restaurant until I suddenly got a call from a company who wanted me. (careerbuilder.com and monster.com are wonderful for all you soon to be grads). I interviewed...and here I sit today. I am working on a military base on a project to destroy chemical warfare agents left over from WWII. It's exactly what I wanted...nice salary, lab setting, nice people. My hours suck, 12 hour days, but I don't work everyday. So it's actually kinda cool in a weird way.

It's actually kinda cool. My best friend, favorite sister, and soon-to-be roommate (7 days) will graduate in May 2003 with her BS in Chemistry. We're two dorks when it comes to schoolwork, but we sure know how to have a great time together when the books are put away

I look forward to hearing about the other Phi Sig smarties out there. I know you exist!

LITP,
Jadey

Hi Jadey,

Well I graduated in 1998 with my BA in Political Science:Global Politics Concentration. When I originally started school way back in the mid80's I wanted to get into the Foreign Service, be a diplomat, etc. When I finally went back to school in 96 I thought about switching to business but was so close to finishing with my Pol Sci degree I decided to keep it that way. My minor was Anthropology.

After graduating I had thought I was going to stay in the auto industry (I worked at American Honda Motor Corp) but ended up working at the University instead. I was the Program Assistant for a mentoring program at CSUDH and was the assistant to the Director of the University Advisement Center. About two years ago I moved over to our Admissions and Records department as an Admissions Evaluator (I get to say yes or no to you coming to CSUDH).

We get tuition covered as staff members on campus so I decided to pursue a Masters in Public Administration. It's making me glad I didn't go in to business when I went back as the program is more business oriented then public policy/political and its not my favorite. The closer masters program in Pol Sci at another CSU where I can use my discount is about 1/2 hour away and I didn't feel like commuting so I'm going to stick to the MPA program. I wouldn't mind moving up in the University somewhere.

Wow Jadey you rock!!

I am going to school to be a teacher. I want to teach fifth or sixth grade. I would rather teach sixth but I will take any job thrown my way. (Budget crisis in Cali sucks!!) Once I get my credentials in teaching which won't be for another 2years I want to get my masters in Psychology. Hopefully one day I will even get my Phd in psych. I think dealing with children is wonderful and I love doing it; watching them grow is so rewarding. With my psychology degree I want to do something with Children's Counciling or something to that effect. (I haven't decided yet) Either way one day I am going to have to be refer to as Dr. Princess Heather. (heehee)

and of course with my Phi Sig career I want to be Grand Archon one day.

I'm noticing a career change trend here....

Well I originally went to college to study Pre-Med--then decided that I didn't have the drive nescessary to succeed in med school, but I still had a love for science, so I graduated with my BS in Biology in 1997. I then moved to the greater Cincinnati area (AKA Northern Kentucky) with a friend and worked for Procter and Gamble in their household chemicals research labs. I also worked for Diversey-Lever in their microbiology labs. Decided that wasn't for me either, so I moved back up here to Michigan.

I then have been working on my masters in education--which I am one more class short of (the dissertation). I did get my certification and now I'm a biology/general science teacher in the 9th and 10th grade....which I absolutely love. I also know all about budget cuts....they suck!!

I do love being a student though, and I'm either going to get another masters in a pure science, or start pursuing my PhD--but I guess I need to finish the Master's first!!

So here's my story....

A long time ago, in a faraway land, there was a highschool senior who wanted to go into science (to be a vet) but thought she was too stupid (which she wasn't) so chose another subject she was good in - French.
Well a person just can't study French can they? What use is that? So she ventured North to a cold land and entered the Translators and Interpreters programme at Laurentian University.
While she loved the school, her new friends, and yes even the residence, she did not have the same love for her programme. It was alright, but she was barely making the grade. She did however realize, after taking Greek and Roman civ as an elective, that she really liked Classics.
Thus, in order to save money, she moved back home and started her venture at the University of Windsor as a double major in French and Classics. (She couldn't give up on French after all - she might not've been great in translating, but she still loved the language!)
It was at this time that she crossed paths with a former friend who was in a sorority (DZ) which sparked an interest in herself. This of course lead to her wonderful affiliation with the greatest sorority of all time - Phi Sigma Sigma!!!
The fair maiden continued her studies for another 2 years before seriously considering her options. She wanted to continue her studies but since she only had 1 year of Latin there's no way she'd be able to continue in Classics. After hearing advice from friends and family, and after years of people saying "you'd be a great teacher!", she went against her heart and in her fifth year of study applied for the B.Ed programme for the following year.
She graduated with her BA honours in French and Classics in June 2001 and loved going to the ceremony (since she missed her HS grad).
Starting her 6th year of university, 1st(and only) year of the bachelor of education, she still had reservations. The first few weeks of class went by, things were looking ok...

oops gotta go

To be continued

Sorry bout that I had to go class.

So things were looking ok. Classes had been in for about 4 weeks when She received her first teaching placement. Well she ended up at her old highschool! She wasn't too certain about this situation, but she hadn't been back to her HS in 5 years. So she went and met her Mentor teacher, a young woman the same age as her whose first words out of her mouth were "I had a Student Teacher before who was horrible. I hope you are better than the last one." Well, our sister was a bit taken aback and shocked by that statement, but heh, she could prove herself.
So starting her 6th week, she no longer had classes at the U but was teaching at her HS. Well, she did her best, and tried very hard, but she just wasn't the greatest teacher. She was reviewed and got a good mark and her Mentor Teacher gave her an OK review half way through, but things still weren't going great. In her 3rd week of teaching the Mentor sat her down and talked to her but she wasn't very helpful. One afternoon in the teacher's lounge she overheard the janitor and the Geo teacher talking about student teachers. Janitor"yeah, I hear Simona got a bad one" Geo teacher glances over at her...she's the only other person in the room, and he knows who she is; the janitor however had never been introduced.
So, that just reaffirmed her own doubts and at the end of the week she got a bad final evaluation from her Mentor teacher and was trying to hold back the tears as her father picked her up from the school.
The following wednesday (halloween consequently) she dropped out of school. She knew she wanted to continue in school though, so she talked to a prof and started sitting in on 2nd yr Latin. The following semester she signed up as a Non-degree student and took 3 more courses. She didn't feel ready to apply to grad school though, so she was looking at job opportunites. She saw an ad for Official Language Monitors, applied and got the job for the 2002-2003 year.
Finally, she realized she had to apply for Grad school or she never would. She had thought a lot about it and found another area she felt would be equally interesting as classics - Library science....She also applied to 3 colleges as backups.
She was accepted to go to Nova Scotia community College, she accepted the offer and paid her deposit and one week later she received a letter from the University of Western. Well once she felt the envelope and knew there was more than 1 sheet of paper inside, she started to get excited.
She opened the letter and was offered admission to the MLIS programme at UWO!! She was so excited that she called her friends at work long distance(during the day that's expensive) and told them. Of course, a day later she came on greek Chat to share her great news with her sisters and she thanks them all for their support!
So, in the end, her adventure is not finished. She is on her way to a new school in a new city with new people and has a lot of discovering yet to do.

So there it is....not sure why I used the third person, makes it sound a bit more interesting doesn't it? Can you tell i've been wanting to share my story for awhile? I love talking about school!

Well, I am currently a marketing and finance major. I have learned how much I don't enjoy finance and am contemplating dropping it as a major. But, I know how hard it is to get a job with just a marketing degree. I used to be an international business major, with my language being Japanese, but then I switched to accounting and didn't really like that after having an internship in it so when I transferred schools I also changed majors. It took a long time to get to the major I'm at right now.

This summer, I have a media assistant internship with the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, which is a place of professional cycling. So I am assisting in making the advertisements and placing them in newspapers and tv stations, as well as making an insert for the US National Cycling Championships, which should be fun.

For the rest of my life, I'm not sure what I want to do. I am kind of interested in media planning, but don't like the idea of working in NYC. I pretty much will go where the wind takes me. I'm from a town that has a booming manufacturing industry- Harley, Pfaltzgraff, York International, Frito-Lay, Hershey, and lots of smaller companies. I do want to move down south eventually. I really do want to help out somehow with Phi Sig once I graduate.

Hey Amanda... My family works for Proter and Gamble...

Anyway, When I originally started school I went for a dual major in music education/voice performance. I realized, however, that I have major stage fright when performing and soon dropped that.

Fast forward to today... I am currently on my way to an associates degree in Marketing. After I finish I plan to go to school for Marketing and Poli Sci. From there I plan to go to law school, concentrating in Contract or Corporate/Business Law. I eventually want to get into politics, working as a political advisor.

I guess that's a long way off from Music Ed, but I think I've only recently grown into myself and what I want to do.

Everyone else's jobs/majors sound great. Just goes to show you why Phi Sigs are so great- We're Out To Change The World!!!!

I am a broadcast and electronic communications major. Which sounds really important but really means I study radio and television (and other forms of mass communication, but mainly radio and television) I would like to go to law school and be an entertainment lawyer. I'm going through the grad. ceremony this spring... but really won't be done until next fall... (although I only have 2 classes left) I can't take classes over the summer though because they are only offering lwoer divison pre-reqs not upper division electives which is what I need to be taking at this point.

I'm currently a Communications major, but that is changing as of next week. I will be a Secondary Education/History Major but I don't want to teach any longer than I have to. I would much rather be a laywer, so after I complete my degree in Secondary Education I am going to teach until I finish law school, and then I'm hopefully going to be a trial laywer, hopefully someday working up to being a very good defense laywer.
