Unhappy Eek... :(

So, things arent looking good for Nu Eta. Tonite our VP said she cant deal with being VP on top of everything else.

That leaves us VP less. We have one girl who is basically MIA who hasnt even been pinned. We have people with little dedication and we never have meetings cos people never show up. International hates us I bet... I just dont know what were going to do. And all of this triggered me being extremely depressed last night. (check my journal for more)

Any suggestions?

Can I just come join a non-dysfunctional chapter?!

If only it were so simple, to join a completely non-dysfunctional chapter, well... there is no such thing. Because I would imagine that even a membership containing only one person, would still be dysfunctional at times. I know that if I were the only one, it would still be dysfunctional, and sisterhood, like family is never flawless.

One of the things our chapter has done is asked the question: "Why Beta Sigma Phi?". Why did you choose to join? Why are you glad you joined? What positive things does the sisterhood bring to your life? I was truly amazed at the responses by my sisters, and sharing the answers with the rest of the chapter was incredible. Our initial plan was to put a list of most of the answers on the back of a rush shirt with the "Why Beta Sigma Phi?" on the front, but budget constraints prevented that from happening. Instead, we (well, one of my ambitious sisters, actually) took some plain printer paper and a whole bunch of markers and made a poster for each answer. We then hung these up where we held our meetings. Sometimes, all of us just need that reminder of why? and sometimes we just need the push to bring back all those reasons.

I definitely wish you and Nu Eta the best, every chapter struggles with a variety of things at different times, but I'm sure that if you hold the torch up high and not hide it from the wind's fury, it will burn brighter as the days pass by.

Sorry so long...

I did look at your journal (I felt like I was prying, but I guess you don't mind since YOU posted it), and you just sound overly committed. No wonder you are stressed. You are doing many things, and each activity clearly means a lot to you. You want to be able to give your very best to school, TBS, Phi Sig, guard, your friends, and your family. You knew Beta was a good thing; you wanted to experience it for yourself and give other women a chance to know it too, so you took a chance at starting a brand new chapter. These are GOOD THINGS. You should be very proud of yourself.

After you've given yourself a big pat on the back (which you REALLY deserve), you need to find about 30 minutes to an Hour to do some major PRIORITIZING! At the top of a piece of paper, write down what you REALLY WANT in your life right now...just a couple of sentence that sum up your current goals and the kind of person you want to be. Then, make a column for each major aspect in your life. For example, I would write:

MARRIAGE CHURCH SCHOOL BETA TAEKWONDO

Under each heading, write down how that aspect of your life contributes to your goals and the person you want to be. If an item no longer fits your self-image or it is keeping you AWAY from your goals, then find a way to drop it or cut back on time spent pursuing it. Sometimes we hang on to activities that USED TO BE important to who we WERE, but they just don't fit anymore. It can be hard to drop things, but sometime you have to. Trust me...I've been there many, many times.

Then write down one or two things under each heading that NEED to be fixed. For example, under Beta you might write:

Elect new Vice President. Choose a set meeting time.

If you can find a way to make each part of your life go just a little bit smoother, you will feel A LOT better.

Finally, I noticed that you don't seem at all happy with the idea of becoming a teacher. I am currently working as a teacher, and I know that you have to truly love it--be passionate about teaching--or you will be miserable! You have put way too much time, money, and work into college to end up with a career that doesn't make you happy. You are a smart, motivated woman who deserves to be excited about her future!! Do some thinking...I'm sure that you can find a career path that you really love.

Beta Hugs to you! I hope that things start going your way. I am really rooting for Nu Eta.

Erica

Erica...
The thing with teaching is that I really do want to teach but Clarions ed program, even though its one of the best in the country, still sucks. I am constructivist all the way... I hate units... what do we do? Units. And 3 page lesson plans for a 20 minute lesson. They all suck.

I want to teach music now. Not just regular ed...

Oh, I see...
My impression from your journal was that you weren't sure about the actually teaching. I completely understand having a problem with the methods of your school. I am in a similar situation. I teach in a very specific program at UMass. The University Writing Program is something that every student goes through (unless they test out), and each class follows the same basic format...writes the same essays...reads the same materials...blah, blah, blah. Overall, I think the Program has some good points, but I don't always agree with the methodology. I can't wait until I actually have some freedom in my classroom.

Hang in there!

Erica

P.S. I'm really sorry if I sounded preachy. I had been feeling sort of down because of my Monday night class, and I really hoped that I could help you AND help myself feel better!
