What if they wanted to come to YOUR campus?
Watching these 'sorority life' shows on MTV brings me to ask the question...what if after the season is over for these shows the sororities that they are about wanted to come to YOUR campus? Would you seriously consider them? How do you think it would affect Greek Life on your campus? Do you think that girls would just want to join this sorority because they were on TV? Knowing some the obvious hazing that went on would you allow them on your campus? In general what do you think?

I definitely think people would want to join simply to be on TV. There are girls like that on every campus. There are girls who join sororities for the wrong reasons even without the glamour of TV cameras.
If they were on my campus I think I'd be really annoyed... having cameras all over the place... good God, Greek Week would be awful!
Fortunately there is only one local on our campus and I know the girls... I really doubt they'd go for something like that. The other sorority besides mine and the local is a national, so they couldn't do it.

I was more wondering about after MTV when they, DZO or whoever, decides to expand to other campuses. What if they applied to come to your campus? Not MTV come to your campus, but the sorority having a chapter on your campus.

I don't think anyone on our campus would do it. We only have national organizations.

From what I understand, it's pretty difficult for a local to become a national. It can be done, but it takes some extraordinarily dedicated women and other campuses have to be open to expansion to a national, because with more than one chapter, a local would become a national (or at least a regional).
S-AEPi supposedly had lots of girls asking to expand to their campus, but I don't know how well that worked out.

I don't think DZO or SXO have any plans to expand...and SigmaAEPi is Jewish-interest and unless things have really changed, there isn't really demand for a Jewish-interest sorority in Clarion.
As far as them expanding, I doubt that they will be as controlling as some of the present national groups with pledging and such...the local chapter will be more what the local girls make it.

KD Nationally wouldn't ever consider it... And actually we received messages from National's a few times telling us NOT to talk to MTV... that if any chapter of KD was found to talk to MTV (on this topic) they would loose their charter.
I love watching Sorority and Fraternity Life.. however I would NEVER want my sorority to be on MTV... because they only show the "juicy" stuff...

Well... since sororities and fraternities differ chapter by chapter, I wouldn't necessarily hold it against them that they bear the same letters. It wouldn't mean that they would have the exact same attitudes and do the same hazing. But perhaps girls would want to join just because that sorority was featured on a TV show. I don't know... good question.

Wouldnt happen at my campus.
Seriously. My university is insanely conservative. Also, we have no locals here and the university has a no-locals allowed policy on campus. They will not recognise a group that doesnt have a national affilliation. They have stated in the past that they do not want a group here who has no risk management rules that are overseen by a national group.
Our last group here that was a local was Gamma Chi in 1992, and they became Sigma Nu.
