Post What is your chapter...

just curious as to what your chapters are like? My chapter is growing a lot, and we are the type of women that have values and morals but also have fun. We hang out with some but not all of the fraternities (tonight was my first sigma chi party and I am a junior). My sisters are lavaliered to Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Farmhouse and they date some Lambda Chi Alphas, Sigma Alpha Epsilons and Kappa Alpha's too. Out of eleven fraternities. My sisters and I have been told by other members of sororities here that they wish they had the sisterhood we have and they wish that they could be as close as we are. That always makes me feel better. I just wondered what your chapters were like.

Cool

Sarah, you know what's funny...I was about to start a topic similar to this!

Okay, as you may know from some of my posts, we're the only Panhellenic organization on campus. Greek life isn't too strong on my campus, but in recent years we've been getting stronger.

Because we're one of only two internationals on campus (TKEs are the other one), we somewhat feel left out of the whole Greek scene on campus. There are 5 other sororities on campus and they have their own council. They've invited us to join them, but because of a conflict in principles (you know what I mean right?), our relations with them have been somewhat strained.

Still, that hasn't affected my chapter and our sisterhood. The new members we've gotten in the past three classes have had so much impact on our chapter morale , and I know that it's because of my sisters that our chapter will only get better and better.

As for our relations with the other fraternities, I'd have to say that we are so close to our TKE brothers. There are two local frats that we've had functions with, but none of them compare to our TKEs. The TKEs are just that...they're brothers. I don't know why, but most (if not all) of us see them as brothers and there hasn't been any dating between us and them!

Both our orgs usually have our meetings on Tuesday nights at our Campus Center, so last January we thought it'd be funny to "re-arrange" their room by removing all their chairs and tables and scattering red and yellow rose petals all over the carpet. Okay--the petals started to stain the carpet, but the brothers were so nice about that they wouldn't even let us clean our mess when we offered to.

And then--for Valentines Day they returned the favor..only this time they had included a bucket of champagne (to be consumed at a more appropriate time, of course) and apple cider...not to mention individual mini champagne glasses for EACH SISTER that had candy in it.

Finally, my BF is in the Coast Guard and every other two months he's out on Patrol either to the South Pacific, Alaska, or down to Baja. For some odd reason our last two sisterhood retreats started on the days that he had to leave. You cannot imagine how thankful I am to my sisters for helping me keep my sanity while he's gone. It really helps that my sisters simply adore Brady, and he loves them too! (On a side note, it was through an "unofficial" Alpha Gam party that he and I met over a year ago )

I'll always be grateful to Alpha Gamma Delta for all of this!

My chapters is kinda strange. I mean we are really great and nice, but there is this division between the fun loving laid back girls and the serious kinda up tight girls. We are also having a problem within the chapter and we don't know wht is wrong so that is hard. I think what it is is the more high strung ppl are stressing us out, I think. But it's really hard to deal with sometimes. Overall and to the other sororities and fraternities we are the girls you can take home to mom, but still can have fun with. We are the girls who will party with you all night long but go home alone. So we can be fun and not be slutty!! I love my sisters, I just wish we could get along better

Sorry Katey, I have to disagree. I think Zeta Alpha is a pretty cool chapter. The problem is, we've had a real shift in the type of members we've gotten. The older girls (now alums) were hardcore party/crazy girls and now the girls are more laid back and more interested in putting the chapter to rights than being wild. Yet our sisters are pretty diverse, which is often the cause of some conflict. We get along with most other organizations and are usually labeled "the nice girls." We used to party with the Delt Sigs a lot but now that they're dry we hang out with Delta Tau Delta and Lambda Chi a lot because a few of our sisters date Delts and one is engaged to a Lambda Chi. We've also started hanging out with sisters from Alpha Beta and Alpha Pi chapters.

What I mean tot say Leslie is that we are an awesome group of girls and I really love all of us, but I think you know what I am talking about. There is something really messed up in our chapter and nobody knows what it is. But, what I think it is exactly what you said: the older members are really resisting some of the turns the chapter has taken, which is a good thing and a bad thing. But what I really meant is that you know there is a division in the chapter, where there are some members, who are still really great, but seem to sometimes inadvertently exclude people. That exclusion, to me, is resulting in a division of the chapter. Though we all really do love each other and we are a really awesome group of girls!!!

Okay another thing about my chapter... we are the girls that didn't want to join a sorority. REALLY! We are the ones that if you met us you would think "not the sorority type".. but at heart we needed more girls like us to feel comfortable.
SO, let me tell you about the other chapters on my campus. There are six other NPC groups
Sigma Kappa- is the smallest sorority. They may be losing their house and that would kill them during rush, which means they could be gone next year. They have 32 members and total is 95 (only one chapter is at total though. I don't know how they will do rush cause there are about 35 women at every party. They are sweet though, just small and some of their members are really cool but their internationals isn't letting them turn down people for bids (one of their members was asked not to return to four fraternities in one weekend before they could depledge her!). I want to help but don't know how to!!!
Kappa Delta- Only chapter at total. They are diverse. Very big, though (my ex boyfriend "dated" three of them at once and they didn't know!). THey are a lot like my chapter, just bigger when it comes to closeness and attitudes.
ADPi- They are thought of as the blonde's with skinny waists, but that changed last fall. They made quota for the first time in forever because they weren't as "Selective" because they had internationals in. Some are really sweet, but some are very fake. At pageants they tend to over do it. I like some of their members though, mainly the newest members, though, cause they are cool.
AOPi- Just a for instance. I know a girl that turned her pin in two days ago cause she couldn't take it. Her three good friends are rushing next year and she won't let them go AOPi. I think that since their numbers jumped so fast they didn't foster their relationships and that has left them in a rut. One of their sisters at a fraternity formal I was at told me that she was excited cause she was chugging a beer so she could pee in the elevator (how classy) and then asked if I was in a sorority cause I should go AOPi.
Phi MU- I never hear their members say anything nice about each other. Four of them are in one of my classes and none of them sit even NEAR each other. Five women left their bid day crying and never returned. They have a hard time keeping members because of some internal problems. I really think they just need a good leader though, to keep the she said that she said stuff from happening.
Chi O- Really good group. They are strong and getting better every year. They were at chapter total til this year. I don't know why they aren't now. They have some really great women and are leaders on our campus. They take pride in themselves and it shows through. I really like them.

SO that is all of them, and what they are like. I went through rush as a sophomore so I had an outside perspective of each chapter and when I went through I like AGD KD and Chi O. They are the only ones on my campus that held themselves to a standard no matter where they were!

At SIU, we only have 4 Panhellenic sororities(AGD, Sigma Kappa, Delta Zeta, and Tri-Sigma). We are the only house that consistently meets quota during rush, and the only one who consistently keeps total(75). We are the girls who can do it all-smart, athletic, very involved on campus and the community, and party. We're also very diverse.

at iup, we are all pretty close.. and i would say the best on campus. we won greek sing 3 years in a row, as well as greek week.. (greek sing is when a sorority pairs up w/ a fraternity and does a dance... i know a lot of schools do this, but all call it something different). we also got homecoming queen this year, which is really great... as well as winning the Mary Stella Wolfe award.. and second place for the interfraternalization award which is where all the fraternities vote on which sororities they like best... sorry if i sound like i am bragging, i am just really proud!
