Chicago-the movie
I saw it last night and it was fabulous! I thought it was going to be a really loose adaptation of the show, but it wasn't. Catherine ZETA Jones, Renee Zelwegger, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah were excellent. Lucy Liu and Mya had small roles. Everyone in the theatre clapped at the end.
I was in NY last week but didn't get a chance to see the show, boo.

okay, CHICAGO is my FAVORITE musical, and I'm afraid to go see the movie for fear that it will make me sad...does it stay REMOTELY true to the script? Or are there weird surprises...??
And tell me....did Queen Latifah ruin Mama Morton? Because she is my favorite character (aside from Go-To-Hell Kitty but that's only because I played her) and if Queenie butchered her, well, i'm going to raise hell!

I haven't had a chance to see it, and I probably won't for at least another month since it hasn't hit Athens yet, but i saw the Chicago:On the Set today. The clips they showed from it look fabulous and the best part is that Catherine Zeta-JOnes, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere did all of their own singing and dancing! I cannot wait to see it.

Wow, I totally LOVED it! I also have never seen so many gay men in one place before. Why are gay men so much more fun than straight men? Just joking, please don't hate me.
My ex-boyfriend even liked it and he absolutely despises musicals.
XOXO,
Annie.

Wow! Wowowowowowowow!
My husband and I went to see this (it was it, Shanghai Knights, or Daredevil, and Chicago won out).
Oh my goodness! What an amazing movie! Excellent, vibrant singing from the three main characters, fantastic dancing, Queen Latifah was great, the choreography was stunning, the costumes were fun, and the music was fabulous.
I haven't seen the stage show, but I'm trying to figure out how they'd do cuts from bits where Roxie is imagining herself on stage to her being on stage to her being back with the cops (or wherever).
Absolutely loved it. Definitely movie-of-the-year material for Catherine Zeta-Jones' dancing and singing alone! And then you add on everything else!

The acting, singing, choreography, etc. was truly OUTSTANDING!!

I felt Queen Latifah did a marvelous job with Mama Morton, personally. Much better than I imagined she would.
And, BrownEyedGirl, I think I have an explanation (or several possible ones) for you.
When people are making nominations in the acting categories, they fill in the names in any category they wish someone to be nominated in. Thus, someone wishing to nominate Queen Latifah would put her name down. What gets tricky, though, is nowhere does it specify that Queen Latifah is a Supporting Actress. She could actully be nominated under lead, if someone so chooses. In her case, it is crystal clear that she is playing a supporting role. However, in Gere's case, it may not have been clear. Thus, Gere could have received enough votes in both categories PUT TOGETHER to garner a nomination, but they were split enough to leve him under the threshold required in either category for a nomination. It is also theorized tht this may have happened to Gene Hackman in regards to the Royal Tenenbaums.
There is also the fact that there were several outstanding male performances this year. While I definitely enoyed Gere's work, I wouldn't be likely to say it was the most taxing performance. It's even pretty obvious that he didn't do all his own dancing. Put up against the other permormnces of the year, the slight is beleivable, IMHO.
You also have to remember that the Oscars are EXTREMELY fickle. Many of the most notable names in cinema never received a competitive Oscar win. (Judy Garland and Alfred Hitchcock leap to mind.) Many of the most notable movies ever made never received Best Picture. (Psycho, ET, Star Wars, Vertigo... those are just a few.)
Personally, I'm banking on the second possible reason in this case. Figured you'd like to hear the others just because they're interesting...and hey, I could always be underestimating Gere's performance. Maybe I'll be eating my hat in a few decaedes.

I saw Chicago last month and it is one of the best movies that I have seen in years. Renee Z. really deserves the Oscar.

Boo on Renee!
But Catherine deserves an Oscar!
Seriously, I loved the movie as I loved the musical. But Renee didn't do it for me. Her singing was ok, but she would have never cut it on a stage (I understand this in NOT the stage, but my point is that Queen L. and Catherine would have). Also, as a dancer, she didn't do it for me at all! Had no sense of the subtelties of Bob Fosse choreography.
No offense Cream!!!!
