war movies?

Two questions:

1) what are you favorites?

2) what is on the horizon?

Some old favorites of mine are Glory, Behind Enemy Lines, Saving Private Ryan (of course), Platoon, Memphis Belle, and Last of the Mohicans.

I don't know how many war movies are coming out in the next few months but Tears of the Sun and Basic are definitely on my list. Although I think Basic is going to be more of a conspiracy theory than an all out war film. But Samuel L. Jackson is a badass so I can't be turned away.

Platoon is the best war movie ever made, period

then:

2) Full Metal Jacket
2) Saving Private Ryan
4) Glory

Other I like include Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers, Hamburger Hill, Casualties of War. I'll name some others as they come up in my head.

Platoon is a good one. The great escape.

Not sure if it counts as a war movie, but Taps. Also Das Boot is an all time great.

Thumbs up

Glory has to be one of the all time favorites. Showing Civil War at what the Blacks did during it!

Any John Wayne War Movie.

Some got to graphic and depressing, even thought it was true along with Platoon, or many others!

In the Words of a Famous General, WAR IS HELL!

Most of you do not realize What War is, Men Dieing! Whether it be our side or theirs, they all have Families who will miss them and have a hard time living!

I will not get into this Iraqie Almost War, but Our Civilian Soldiers will die and come home in body bags leaving Familys and Freinds!

God if there is one, do not let this happen!

Dude, it was a very slow movie and it's like four hours long. It focuses more on how the war started - highlighting some of the earlier battles. It's also filmed almost entirely from the Confederate point of view.

I still really liked it because I can usually deal with movies that are slower. But, I can also see how it is getting horrible reviews. I still think it's a damn good movie though. But I'll tell everyone to wait until it comes out on video, it's not fun watching that long of a movie in the theater.

Agree with you on that. Only seen bits and pieces of Glory (not a big Civil War movie fan).

The Great Escape is loosely based on a real life mass POW break out in WW II. Fifty were recaptured and later executed by the Nazi SS. Only two managed to make the 'home run' back to Allied lines.

My list of favorites:

Battle of Britain (outstanding aerial footage)
Patton
The Siege of Fire Base Gloria
By Dawn's Early Light (fictional representation of an actual nuclear strike mission, but the procedures are authentic)
Hamburger Hill
The Big Red One
The Longest Day
A Bridge Too Far
Return With Honor it's a documentary about Vietnam War POWs and how they managed to outwit and outlast their captors.

Failsafe is a thought-provoking movie -- it was one of Larry Hagman's (JR Ewing) first movies

but i like most military and/or spy movies

Sh*t... how could I forget Fail-Safe? (The original version; never saw the George Clooney TV remake, though I'm told it was good.).

Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb is also pretty good, even though it is a total satire of nuclear command and control.

Ok I hope someone knows what movie I am talking about because for the life of me I can’t recall the name. It’s a short/mini movie that I saw as filler between movies on the Sundance channel. It is set after the civil war where caring/transporting the confederate flag is a considered a crime/act of war. Well the protagonist receives a request to bring the flag to a funeral ceremony but he is intercepted by union soldiers in route. He evades capture only to be caught by a freed slave. For the former slave to let him go on his way he has to make a choice of what to give him in return. The flag or a locket from the woman he loves. He makes his choice and is murdered on his way to the funeral. Does anyone know the name of this movie?
