Anybody think there will be 2 fewer chapters at Buffalo?
I just watched the season premiere of Sorority and Fraternity Life. Anybody else want to bet that at least one of these chapters is going to join the ranks of the "unrecognized" at U of Buffalo? I mean hell, they're already showing pledges doing push ups in the commercial.

Indeed... I smell hazing. I guess we'll see...

I dunno, though... Sometimes non-NPC/IFC chapters don't have as strict of requirements as those who are. I know there's a service sorority on campus that still calls their new members "pledges" and do things that separate them from the chapter... not as big of a deal as what the Sigma Chi Omega guys are doing, but still...
P.S.-I wonder what Sigma Chi's take is on the fact that there are such similarities between the two... down to the white cross.

I believe, though, that the state of New York has anti-hazing laws in place . . . I'm not sure how strict they are, though.
Sigma Chi Omega was/maybe still is an interest group for Sigma Chi, and it's a possibility that they were even founded with the idea of becoming a Sigma Chi colony from the beginning. Of course, I don't know if they'll have much luck with that after this show . . .

as I stated in another thread, remember how much control MTV has over what we see and what the chapters do. MTV controls every thing down to most of the small details. Which is why most national offices have instructed their chapters not to do the shows.

I definitely do agree that MTV controls much of what we see, and I have no doubt that they encourage drama -- but I doubt most of these groups would agree to go along with this if it meant that they didn't get to pick their own members, run things their own way, etc. Even though they are willing to go on television, they're still real organizations who want the best for themselves, and if MTV was allowed to pick their pledges for them, I doubt they'd sign the contract.
The truth is that there are real groups out there that haze, or have claim they don't but have definitions of hazing which differ from those of national groups. If MTV wants to show hazing, it doesn't have to make this stuff up -- they just have to find the right groups to film.
National offices instructed their chapters not to do the show because they knew MTV would edit it in a less-than-positive way, not because they thought that MTV would FORCE their chapters to start hazing.

Yeah. MTV may selectively edit, but I don't think they force members to do things they wouldn't do otherwise. If you have one beer all semester, they can probably make you look like a drunk ... but if you drink no alcohol at all, they're not going to post-production a beer into your hand!

According to the SUNY Buffalo website:
General Conduct Rules and Regulations
Any student found to have committed the following misconduct is subject to disciplinary sanctions:
HAZING - Hazing, defined as an act which endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or which destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, a group or organization.
It doesn't say what the sanctions are. For the record New York State also has anti-hazing laws in place.
