Why not work on a project related to our national philanthropy- ag in the classroom? Visit their web-site at www.aitc.com and look through the lesson plans and potential activities. You can do anything from talking to kids at a school assembly, teaching kids how to plant a seed and care for it as it grows, or explain the importance of agriculture to older children. Let me know if you need more help. I can send along some materials for you.
Take care.

Philanthropy Idea!
Hi Sisters!
I just wanted to let you know of an idea that the Alpha Theta chapter did as an Agriculture Project. We did a coin collection competion with the Ceres Sisters on our campus with the money going to Heifer Project International ( http://www.heifer.org). Over $200 was raised in order to send to purchase livestock! To celebrate our efforts then, we had a professional speaker and a covered dish dinner. It went really well.
Good Luck finding Ag based projects!

Beth Pugh, Alpha Theta

What a great idea from the Alpha Theta sisters. This could easily be incorporated with our National Philanthropy project too with a few minor additions. One option might be to visit a school, explain the goal and importance of heifer project international, and have the classes collect coins the day afterwards. The children would learn how a heifer can become a cow and provide valuable nourishment to developing countries. Keep up the good work ladies.
Sisters,
Robin

ag philanthropy help
Have you done anything with ag in the classroom? Our philanthropy chair is working with Block and Bridle to organize ag in the classroom. Block and Bridle has done ag in the classroom before and they are going to "show us the ropes!"
You could do a pet wash in the spring, farm safety classes, or something like that.

Omega-
A pet wash is usually done as a fundraiser. You would have to incorporate educating children into the activity if it were to become a philanthropy project with AITC.
Your other idea of farm safety classes is a great one though.
If you'd like me to send some AITC materials to your chapter, I'd be more than happy to. Just drop me an email at rrastani@hotmail.com.
Good luck.

more on Heifer Project International
I'm so excited to see Heifer Project mentioned in this philanthropy thread!
I just started attending volunteer trainings and committee chair meetings for the Chicago branch of Heifer International, and I think I'm going to start doing presentations at schools and civic groups...I'll probably start with the Ag Science High School here in Chicago, and update them on some of the urban agriculture projects going on locally. I'd love to come visit some local Sigma Alpha chapters, too! I'm an alum from Alpha Rho at the University of Arizona.
I know of some gals at Wheaton College who sold Heifer pins at their school for $2 each and raised $7000 that went toward purchasing livestock gifts for people all over the world! The pins are so cute - they're small, about 1" diamter, and they're all different colors. Each has a different picture of an animal or plant on it with a cute slogan like "Fish Farm" (aquaculture), "Think Pig," "Treasure a Tree," "Love a Llama," "Bee Sweet," "Go Goat"...everything from water buffalo to sheep to rabbits to geese.
Let me know if you'd like a visit from somebody or if you'd like a bag of pins to sell as a philanthropy fundraiser (or even just to wear, to spread the word).

combining HP with ag in the classroom
One more thing - Heifer volunteers often visit classrooms and talk about the importance of agriculture. I'll let them know about our National Philanthropy website so they can find lesson plans and give even better presentations. One lady here in Chicago always brings dixie cups and goat milk to share with the kids; then she talks to them about how different animals can help people overcome hunger and malnourishment in developing countries.
cool, eh? e-mail me if you want to know more (Heifer's website makes it difficult to grasp all that they do) or if you want literature. I'll shut up now so I don't take up the whole forum.

HPI
HI,
I went to heifer project international for spring break 2 years ago in arkansas! It was one of the best weeks in my life. I am so glad to hear that others are involved. I was at Clemson University and the ag college tries to send a group of people every year. Congrats on your new job in Chicago. I am working on my PhD in Lincoln NE, now and would love updates on how things are going with heifer project!
Sisters,
Talia

In the tons of spam i get in my school account these days i actually found something worthwhile.
Perhaps you could partner with www.adoptaclassroom.org
and do something agriculturally related.
I have not had a chance to browse this website, but i think it would be something to at least look into
