Changing majors???

Hey there!
I am so confused... I really thought i knew what i wanted and that was to go into Grad school and be an Occupational Therapist, but i am up for the challenge. And here is the but... I have always had a passion for History... and I really feel like I want to major in it. What is your take? I am going into my 3rd year and I am still at Sophmore standing, credits wise. I do so much better in History than any other class... what should i do... please help. I know History really is not that pracitical, but i have a yearning for it. I really appreciate it.

Nat

from the professional major-switcher...

I think that if you enjoy history more than anything else you should go for it.

I've changed my major at least 3 times, and I think I've finally found something to stick with

I think of it this way: Do what makes you happy. If you won't be happy going to work every day as an Occupational Therapist and would be very happy doing something with history, you should do what makes you happy and what you like. It's like being paid for what you like to already do!

On the flip side, (my boyfriends father would always tell me this: ) a degree is just a piece of paper that says you studied something in college. It doesn't mean that you absolutely have to go into the field you studied in college (of course I'm sure it helps since you will have the background if you majored in it).

I just changed my major from an Undeclared Science to History! I've always wanted to work for NASA, so I thought I HAD to major in Engineering or Physics...thing is, I HATE Math with a passion. I was stressed out over Calc I, and I would have had to take a lot more math! So I switched to History. History is a good basis for a government job(like NASA) and plus, as a fallback, you can always teach!

Listen. I chose fashion merchandising as my major just so I could take the History of Costume classes...I didn't really care about the business stuff. In fact, I thought it was boring. But now that I have a degree in it, that's what I'm gonna have to do...which is why I'm seriously considering going back to school to get a teaching certificate, since I recently discovered after subbing for a few months that I really like teaching. I wish I had known this earlier, but hey. If you really like History, do it. I love History myself, but didn't think I could do anything with a History degree. You do not want to end up stuck doing something you don't like just because it "looks good" or the pay is good or whatever...you do what you like to do.

Screw practicality.

I have plenty of friends who were in "practical" majors and HATED the work, and HATE the jobs that they have now. If being prepared for a job is that important to you, you can take other classes in career-minded things and do other things (like working part-time) that can boost your marketability. But, as far as your major, you're fine. I know art history majors who went straight to Goldman Sachs after graduation. It really doesn't matter.
