Women in Ag History

Our Chapter is assisting another Ag Club to host the first annual Agriculture Awareness Week on campus. We are really excited about this!

However, we are trying to create a display booth about the history of women in agriculture. Two others and myself have been searching high and low for information. Depressing, I know, there is not much to be found!

I was hoping some Sigma Alpha sisters could help us out by sending us any names, stories, or historical facts they might have knowledge of!?

PLEASE HELP!!

In Sisterhood,
Katie Hulse

What a great idea! I know there have been many notable women in agricultural history, but of course my mind is on fall break...

We toured the Cowgirl Hall of Fame during National Convention, you might do searches on some of the honorees (cowgirl.net) for ideas. Also, JoAnn Smith (an honorary member of SA) was the first female president of what is now NCBA. You may have some luck looking under history at some state ag college sites as well. Good luck!

p.s. your question got me thinking: here's something I found searching

Don't forget about Anne Veneman!

Also the first women horse trainers and jockeys.

I'm so excited about this effort. I challenge all the sisters out there to find one woman that made a historic contribution to agriculture and post it here with the details.

Sisters,
Robin

Women Jockeys

Diane Crump was the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby aboard Fathom in 1969.

Julie Krone, who has won more races than any other woman rider, has ridden in the Kentucky Derby twice. She became the first female to ride in more than one Derby ? first in 1992 and then again in 1995. She was the first woman to ride in the Belmont, the first to win a Triple Crown event (the 1993 Belmont) and the first to ride in the Breeders' Cup.

Thumbs up Thanks!

I really appreciate everyones interest in this topic! I have found myself doing hours of research because this really interests me! I think the challenge is a great idea too! (Plus it would really help me out!) The suggestions I have already gotten from the board are great ones that I hadn't thought of! So keep up the good work and keep on suggesting women that you know of!

Thanks again!

Thumbs up

I just wanted everyone to know that Clemson Universities 1st annual Ag Awareness Week was awesome! The Tau chapter sisters did a fantastic job hosting the Chili Cook-off. We had a great time! There was lots of sister participation, lots of money made, and great food eaten!

I also wanted to mention that I finished the display board about the History of Women in Agriculture at the last minute! But it looked great and I found tons of interesting facts! If anyone is interested just email me and I'll forward you the names, dates, and accomplishments!

Hope everyone else had as good of a weekend as the Tau chapter!
