Sigma Pi Phi (The Boule)
Any of you Savoy magazine readers out there? Well there's a great article in the December issue, that has Al Sharpton on the cover. The article concerned the almost centuries old Sigma Pi Phi or Boule, which is the oldest fraternity for African-American men. The article talked about how exclusive and aristocratic the organization is. Well right now, the organization has an internal struggle going on between the older members or "blue-bloods" and the younger members. See alot of what they do, if they do anything at all is not visible in the Black community. The olders members want to stay an elitist social club, while the younger members want it to be more service and activist oriented. Reader this article gave me a greater appreciation not only for Kappa but also the other D9 organization. While we all have a strong fellowship aspect to us, we were all founded to do something greater! Also, while we have in the past been looked upon as being elitist, after reading this article, it makes us look like we just hand out membership. So to sum it all up, let us all take pride in what our organizations are doing in our communities.
Note: This post is not too hate on members of the Boule, for some of them are actually members of D9 organizations. However, I only found out about the Boule a year ago. How many of you knew about the Boule growing up, or knew members of the Boule?
