Psi Chi & Sororities

I will be majoring in Psychology, and Psi Chi is the Honor Society. I know that Psi Chi is Greek, but is it considered an real GLO? I was curious if it is possile for me to be in Psi Chi and a sorority? I want to be in a sorority and would choose that if I had to choose, but I would love to be in an Honors Society. I'd appreciate any info ya'll could provide me.

Most govering documents (to my knowledge) of Social GLO's are written such that you can only have membership in one <i>Social</i> GLO. Honor Society's are not considered social; therefore, you could be a member of a Social GLO and an Honor Society as well. Many times a sorority looks favorable on her sisters being memebers of Honor Societies.

In addition, the fact that you will be in an honor society AND a GLO is quite impressive. Shows that your academic goals are where they should be.

I was a member of Tri-Beta, the biology honorary, for a while in college. Time commitments between school, ZTA and 2 part-time jobs meant I had to "drop" something.

I was a member of both Sigma Alpha Iota (proffesional music frat. for women) and Delta Zeta. You can join as many as you want in actuality. You can join as many honor societies on campus as you want. Honor societies do not have rules that state that you can only join one(unless they are for different majors) If you are a bio and If there are 3 different bio honor societies, you can join all three. Proffesionals are different. You can only join one proffesional within your major. I could only join one music frat. but i could join business if i wanted. socials limit you to one. So you can be a member to as many honors society that are available to you in your major, you can join as many prof. (one to each major), and one social. You might just be burnt out. if you need further clarification, just let me know.

My boyfriend was actually a psychology major and was part of Psi Chi as well as Alpha Epsilon Pi. So I guess there aren't any regulations on social and academic greek organizations.

Oooh, I just LOVE honor societies. As everyone said, you can indeed hold membership in a social GLO as well as academic and professional societies. Just keep organized, and don't bite off more than you can chew.(Being an officer in three organizations is harder than it sounds.) But most importantly, keep up the great work! And let your social GLO know what a smarty you are!

Sorry I have to disagree with everyone here:

Definitely ask (I'm speaking generically here) when you are investigating joining a professional GLO whether you would also be allowed to join a social sorority. I did not ask, pledged my professional GLO, and later found out I could not join a social sorority. I was unbelievably disappointed. Please please please ask beforehand if you are interested.

*Note: This isn't to say I don't love my professional GLO, I adore it, and I'm now the president of my chapter. However, I was heartbroken when I couldn't pledge a social, and I don't want to see others make the same "mistake" *

I happen to be a member of Psi Chi and a national social sorority....its great!!! IfI can do both, im sure you can also. Most all of the members of Psi Chi are members of various social sorors or frats

Ok, my bad! Yes, I would have to agree that it is a good idea to ask first! There are so many different professional organizations to choose from now. It is always good to ask.

There is generally a pretty big diffrence between an Honor Society with a Greek letter name and a professional org. with a Greek letter name. Be sure of the distinction before you generalize about all of them.
