Talking formals

hi,
i'm helping out planning our spring formal this year. First time going to a sorority formal and helping to organize any advice from some experienced GCer's?
any funny stories about plans gone wrong (or right) or how to avoid potential disasters?

We had our first (and only) formal at the Kirpatrick Center here in OKC... It's one of those childrens' science museums with all of the hands-on exhibits. Was very different from most other formals but I think in a good way.

We had our formal about a month ago. For the centerpieces on the tables we had small fishbowls with ribbon tied around them with goldfish swimming inside...we set the bowls on top of colored tissue paper and had candles around the tissue paper. It was way cute but a BAD idea. About an hour into the night some drunk guy was trying to catch a fish and knocked a candle into the tissue paper resulting in a HUGE fire!! Luckily we got it taken care of with no damage, but it was exciting. Just remember, tissue paper and fire DONT mix!

Cool a sad but true story that turned out good...

Alright, our founders day this formal was got off to a great start. We had a newly opened hotel lined up to hold our banquet at, and a discount on a block of rooms for our alumni. Catering, the DJ, the buses, all that was lined up way in advance.

The RSVPs were coming in, everything was looking good. Three weeks before our formal, the hotel went out of business. They had a $55,000 electric bill I guess. So boom, they didn't answer the phone or anything. We lost out on our $250 deposit.

But more importantly we had no place to host our formal! After two weeks of making calls and trying to figure stuff out, we finally got the local Masonic Temple lined up. They have a really nice facility so it worked out good. We finally got everything figured out and reserved on a Monday, and our founders day was THAT SATURDAY!

So it's game time. We all show up. Everything is going well. We head to the bar to get a drink, and there is one nice older women working the bar. She thought it was going to be a shriner event, so they just had one bartender who was not very experienced at making drinks. So there are about 20 people lined up at the bar to get a drink, so two of our bros who are bartenders ask her if she wants help and she said "hell yeah!" So we have two of our bros behind the bar mixing drinks! They hoped back there whenever it got busy, and everyone had lots of fun. The nice lady bartender was having a blast, dancing with us and doing shots and everything.

It was all put together last minute, and some minor problems once we got there. Oh yeah, our historian (who sets up formal) had to make both a pop run and a beer run two different times because the caterers ran out at the bar.

But it all ended well, and we had a blast!!!

Cake?, NOOOOOO

We have a formal every semester, usually things go well but two years in a row we had a cake. Please do not have a cake. The first year we had a sister that was a little too happy and we were trying to pose everyone for a picture when she feel into the cake. The next year we took the cake back to our hotel where some of the guys decieded to start a food fight with the cake. It was not a pretty picture.
