Cardiac Care Week/Month Activities

What is your chapter (collegiate/alumnae/one you are invovled with in any way) doing for Heart Month and Cardiac Care Week?

Cardiac Care Week is this week (Feb 7-11).

Monday: We ordered red Alpha Phi wristbands that say "Take Heart" and "Alpha Phi" on them and they are really cute. We bought extra if members wanted to buy them for a friend or family member. Great way to promote Heart Month by wearing them all week and beyond.

To order the wristbands from the EO click here - https://www.alphaphi.org/foundation_...ake_heart.html

Tuesday: Fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery from 6-9. Bring your friends to get ice cream and tell them you are with Alpha Phi. 25% of all profits will go to back to Alpha Phi to benefit cardiac care.

Wednesday: Alpha Phi Wear Red Day. Wear something red to class to show your support. Wear the Red Dress Pin or put it on your bag or backpack.

Thursday: Wear your Red Dress out and about.

To order the Alpha Phi Red Dress Pin click here - https://www.alphaphi.org/foundation_...ents2.html#red

Friday: Everyone wears their "work week" t-shirt that says "Rush your heart out" with the APhi red dress logo on the back. (the chapter traditionally makes a special shirt for "work week" which is the week before Formal recruitment when the chapter comes back to prepare and have fun together.)

We also have a 'Go Red For Women' group on the facebook for our school.

Would love to hear what all of you do!

Alpha Phi hosts Heart Throb charity event
Annual fundraiser benefits cardiac care

Nick Henne, News Editor
February 15, 2005

Alpha Phi sorority raised nearly $2,000 to benefit cardiac care in its annual Heart Throb fundraising event last week, in which nine ECU fraternities and local businesses participated.

In the Heart Throb fundraising event, Alpha Phi kidnapped two fraternity men from nine fraternities and held them hostage in their house, where they received pizza and other prizes before they were bailed out by their chapter presidents. During the following week, a booth was then set up in the Wright Plaza with jars for each organization to make donations. Proceeds went to benefit the Alpha Phi foundation, which goes toward their sorority's philanthropy of cardiac care.

Alpha Phi also received donations from various businesses throughout Greenville.

The goal of the event was to raise money and raise awareness for their philanthropy and the seriousness of cardiac care. They said they wanted to get Greek life more involved in a friendly, competitive way.

Red garb donned in 'heartfelt' support

By Holly Abrams

For young women, heart disease is becoming more common as lifestyle-related factors that increase heart risk are becoming more common among girls, teenagers and young adults, according to the NHLBI.

Education is key in preventing heart disease, said Sarah Petersen, president of Alpha Phi, a sorority which is active nationwide in donating money to cardiac care.

"It's easily preventable; with healthier lifestyles people can really change what will happen to them in the future," she said.

Women and men alike are encouraged to plan a healthy diet and lifestyle, she said. Regular exercise can also bring down one's chances of developing heart disease. In addition, people should stop smoking and try to reduce the stress in their lives.

Young people can make a difference by being the ones to encourage older family members to get checked for heart disease and look out for their health, Alving said.

"College students can really be the messengers for heart disease," she said.

Greeks do good

compiled by Emily Yoon
February 04, 2005

Despite all the stereotypes, Greek life isn't all just about partying and socializing. National Greek Fraternities and Sororities are also required to participate in philanthropy, and many Greek organizations choose to support a single charity. Here is a breakdown of some Greek organizations at Hopkins and a list of some of the charities and causes they support.

Alpha Phi: The sisters of Alpha Phi support and raise awareness for Cardiac Care. They show their support through their annual fundraiser, the King of Hearts. This fundraiser is a pageant that showcases selected fraternity brothers in different categories, much like a traditional beauty pageant for young girls. Proceeds go to the American Heart Association.

Junior wins talent contest, $500 prize
Thirteen men compete for title, competition's proceeds benefit fund

Thirteen men participated in the Alpha Phi sixth annual Mr. Phi-nominal competition. Proceeds will benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation, which serves as a funding source for education in women's cardiac health, leadership development and philanthropy.

Staresnick, who will receive $500 for winning the competition, said contestants were judged based on four criteria: a private five-question interview process before the show, a talent competition, a final question each at the end of the show and the recent Penny War. For the Penny War, each contestant had a jar set up in the Atrium to raise money for cardiac care and research.

Allison Greene, one of four vice presidents of Alpha Phi and one of two directors of Alpha Phi philanthropy, said she was pleased that more than 400 students attended the competition. She said the organization's goal for proceeds this year was $4,400 compared to last year's $4,000. They do not know yet how much money Wednesday's event raised.

Greene was pleased the event brought the Ball State community together, she said.

"It wasn't just a greek event -- it was all of Ball State. We were all here together doing something," she said. "We've been planning this since last spring, and it makes you feel good all the hard work is paying off and is going to such a great cause."
