Lightbulb Rush for the Guys

Hi everyone!

You have all be so incredibly helpful to this ignorant PNM that I thought I'd impose on you once again to ask advice for guys regarding rush...

My boyfriend is planning to rush at UOP. He's a stellar athlete, accomplished student, and an all around nice guy. (<--- not saying this out of a bias!)

The only problem is that he comes off as fairly quiet and well, slightly "square". He's one of those guys who subscribes to the philosophy of "Don't waste time with small talk" which is a problem since small talk seems to be a large part of rush.

Do any of you fraternity men have advice for him regarding how he can make himself, as well as his rushers, more comfortable?

Also, is rushing in khaki pants and a polo alright for guys?

Any words of advice would be much appreciated!

XOXO,
Annie.

If your talking University of the Pacific i know a few greek people there.
The best advice for rush is to just have fun...i know its hard when you don't know anyone, but usually the guys will make an effort to talk with the rushees, and make sure they are having a good time. sometimes its better that you are a quite person...i have seen guys at rush who pop off at the mouth and they just look really stupid.
tell him good luck.
josh...

I go to Santa Clara University, which is very similar to UOP. As rush chair for my chapter, my best advice is that the prospectives need to distinguish themselves in some way. When there are 100 (or more) guys coming through in a single night, sometimes it is hard to remember people, especially if they are quiet.

My advice is that your boyfriend needs to make sure he talks to important people in the house (president, vp, social chairman, rush chairman), as well as people who have similar interests. If a brother remembers a guy who shared their interests, they are more likely to pull for them when voting comes around.

Other than that, just tell him to keep an open mind and go where he feels most "at home".

Oh yeah, the khakis + polo should be fine, but make sure you check the dress code; most chapters have nights where you need to wear at least a shirt + tie.

Hi Josh!

Yeah, that's right... University of the Pacific. May I ask what fraternities your friends are in?

XOXO,
Annie.

Wait...

Don't forget about Pi Kappa Alpha. I've met a few of my brothers from our chapter at the University of the Pacific, and it sounds as if your boyfriend would make an outstanding Pike.

First, Pi Kappa Alpha looks for Scholars, Leaders, Athletes, and Gentlemen. I know that the UOP Chapter is an elite chapter of PiKA and upholds our ideals very well. From what I know about them, they are the kind of men that would make you proud to have your boyfriend affiliate himself with. They have won our "Philanthropic Donations" award for several years by donating something like 90-100K annually to charity. Simply amazing.

Second, there is a Pike on GC...Concise. He would be a good person to PM to find out more about the Pikes at UOP.

Finally, khakis and a polo should be fine unless otherwise specified.

Oh, one more thing. I went through deferred recruitment and would say that getting to know the brothers in the fall was a great way for me to get interested in Greek Life. I would also probably be seen as quiet and "square", so my advice would be to meet one or two brothers in each chapter and develop relationships with them. By the time second semester started, I knew exactly where I wanted to go and my decision was simple. Hopefully, the same can happen for your boyfriend.

woah, thats crazy that someone is talking about rush at UOP on here.... anyway, obviously, i'd say pike all the way. from my perspective there is no reason to rush any other fraternity, but i'm clearly biased. i'm going to PM you and see if i can be of any help.

I'd say he shouldn't make a judgement before going through rush. Tell him to go where he thinks he'll best fit in. Have him ask serious questions about what is expected of him as a new member. Most of all he needs to be himself. Rush for men is MUCH more laid back than I understand it is for women.

Just tell him to go through, meet everyone he can, give everyone a fair shot and then make a judgement.

Ok I have an off the topic question...how long have the Pikes been using Scholar-Athlete-Leader-Gentlemen? That's a huge SigEp thing with the Balanced Man Program and while I realize all fraternities are looking for that sort of thing, it's weird you two have the same "slogan".

And to get back on topic, Annie, your boyfriend shouldn't worry to much. I know a really reserved guy here who is a TKE, and GeekyPenguinBoy, a SigEp, is pretty quiet until you get to know him, and they both found their homes!

Pikes vs Sig Ep

To answer your question, many fraternities adopted similar programs around the same time during the 1990s. It's pretty simple stuff, and any good fraternity is going to come to essentially the same conclusions. Sig Ep and Pike are similar in that they both have improved very fast nationally in the last 25 years. Both have very aggresive rush/marketing programs. The SigEp 'Balanced Man' program seems to be very good, and it's somewhat more complicated and involved than just a name. We Pikes use the 'Scholar-Leader-Athlete-Gentleman' phrase very successfully. Most major nationals have similar initiatives.

Sigma Nu has LEAD... (Leadership, Ethics, Achievment & Development).

I know that ATO has a similar program.
