RHO CHI Question

My school is getting rid of the name Rho Chis and calling them recruitment counslers. My question is, is why are they doing this? I have heard that there is a sorority called Rho Chi but I really dont see that as possible. Please let me know

I heard from our Panhellenic Council that a Pharmaceutical Honnor Society had the letters Rho Chi, and that's why we were not allowed to call recruitment councilors Rho Chis anymore.

I hope this helps

That's weird. Two things can't have the same name?

yup - it's the pharmacy honor society. think of it as someone else sharing your sorority's nickname - it gets confusing to non-members.
talk to your panhellenic to see if you can come up with a new name. we began our transition last year. we were rho chis until we had to change to recruitment counselors. that get to be too much to say, so now we're rho mu's (recruitment mentors). there are also rho gamma's (guides).
hope this helps.

Thumbs down

When I rushed in Fall 2001, they were still called Rho Chis, but this year we had to call them either "recruitment counselors" or "Rho Sigmas". We don't even HAVE that pharmacy society at our school! It's confusing enough that we're supposed to say "new members" instead of "pledges", and "recruitment" rather than "rush", but now this?!? ugh! I'm all for a little bit of political correctness, but this is just taking it too far in my opinion. Let's be honest: we can't please everybody!

This is just a guess, but maybe there are copyright issues with the use of Rho Chis? I'm pretty sure most Greek organizations have copyrighted their specific names by now. Maybe Rho Chis being used in conunction with another Greek organization- even if it's not as the name of the org- would be confusing enough that the organization Rho Chi would be able to sue.

Again, I'm no copyright lawyer, so I could be totally wrong, but that was just my idea.

If NPC was going to ask its member groups not to use Rho Chi, they should at least have given ONE replacement name for them to use. Rho Gamma, Sigma Rho Chi, Rho Mu - pick one and stick with it. I don't think saying you have to call them recruitment counselors is the answer, because everyone will keep abbreviating it.

no kidding, 33girl! It should be the same all over the US, because some girls going through rush may be from out-of-state, and they may use the term from wherever the grew up or from what a friend/sister/cousin/etc told them. I really miss it being called Rho Chis because it makes so much more sense Rho Chis, RC, Recruitment Counselers...

hahaha... what kind of reactions do you get when you yell the name of their sorority? did you ever think of yelling random OTHER sororites to confuse people? or even fraternities?

Gamma Chi

Purdue has dropped "Rho Chi" and switched to "Gamma Chi" (Greek Counselor). I'm finally getting used to saying Gamma Chi. It took some time though!
