When is it ok to use "soror"?
Hi Ladies, I know that a GDI should not use the term loosely, but I was wondering is it ok to say "your sorors" when speaking to a member of any sorority? I have done this, not in any way trying to be disrespectful, but with the utmost respect in my usage. To let the person know that I understood their bond and I wasn't a part of it, if you understand what I am trying to say, the member did not get offended ( I don't think she did), for she didn't correct me... I just want to make sure how other members feel about this. Also How about saying " The sorors that I have met?" Thanks for your responses and be gentle with me!

Hey Traci --
Personally, if a non-affiliate said "your sorors" when talking to me, I wouldn't be upset, but others might be. To err on the side of caution, I'd just say "your sisters" or "your Zeta sisters" when talking to other Zetas about the sorority.
Was that gentle enough?

Not preferred
I'm only speaking for myself, but I prefer that sisterfriends refrain from using "soror" in nearly all contexts. I never used the term before I was invited to join my sorority.
Memberfriend or your XYZ sister is fine with me.

I am not offended when a non-Soror uses that term, "your Sorors"....and when speaking to ther greeks I will often say my Soror(s)...and will call theirs, your Soror(s)...sometimes I might say Sister Soror and I have heard folks in the nphc say my AKA Soror(if someone was a Zeta or Delta, etc.)

Actually, I had never heard the word used before I joined this chat thingy (which was this month)... so if anyone said 'soror(s)' (greek or non) to me or in general I'd probably look at them a little weird. We just say, 'your/my/her sisters'.

Soror is generally used by members of NPHC sororities (Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho). I've almost never heard it used in context with NPC sororities.

Some do, some don't. I've seen it used with increasing frequency here on Greekchat.

This topic was brought up in brief at BGLC this year. The term Soror and Frater is properly used when referring to anyone else in a fraternity or sorority. It shows pocession or fellow membership. To specify my sorors or my frat(ers) would be to say of the same organization.

Hey there... Just reading some posts of the GLO's that we have on our campus. Wanted to see how everyone is doing. There is so much Greek love here.
Anyways.... I think I've seen it in some Phi Sigma Sigma (a NPC) literature. We refer to eachother as sister most of the time.
Some of my friends who are GDI's refer to my 'sisters' as my 'sorors'. It doesn't bother me. They are simply refering to the relationship that we have.
BTW - the Zeta's at my campus are hella cool!!!! Keep up the good work.
Greek life...Gotta luv it!!!!!!!!
